Visitors and locals crowded Hamilton Bus Station yesterday in an effort to catch what could be the last bus home. While many of the passengers were upset about the situation, most were more interested in how they would be getting home. One Smith’s man, calling himself Rocky, said: “I usually try to take the number one bus, but I have no idea if there will be another one tonight.“I might have to take the three and walk. Or even a ten or eleven. This whole thing is crazy.”Another man said: “I left work a little early today to make sure I could get a ride home. I kind of figured that this was going to happen, but I forgot my helmet, so it’s either a bus or a taxi.”“Nobody knows what’s going on,” a Devonshire man said. “I’ve been asking when my bus is coming, and nobody’s been able to say anything. Maybe it will come, maybe I’ll be walking home.”A Somerset woman said she was upset by the decision by bus drivers to strike after a female driver was fired for failing to take a drugs test, saying she agreed with the Government’s decision to fire the driver.“They should just let that girl stay fired,” she said. “She didn’t want to take the drug test, she shouldn’t be driving the buses. That simple. You can’t keep on going on strike for this foolishness. They better be running tomorrow morning. I don’t want to take a taxi.”Larry Copeland, visiting the Island from Long Island, said he thought he was lucky when the bus to Hamilton appeared as soon as he arrived at the bus stop.“I guess I might not be so lucky after all,” he said. “If we can’t get something here, I guess we’ll try the ferry.”As the number of buses pulling into the station started to trail off, one driver offered a few would-be travellers a ride in her car.The last bus left the station just after 5.30pm, but around 30 people remained at the station, hoping that one more bus would come.Donald Pedro, from Warwick, said: “I can’t really afford a taxi. I’ve been trying to call around and arrange a ride, but no luck so far. If I knew this morning this was happening I could have set something up, but for now I’m kind of stranded.”
