Rawlins on target as Canaries run riot

involved in almost every goal as defending champions Canaries romped to a 10-3 victory over Bluebirds in women's field hockey action at Nationals over the weekend.

Such a scoreline is rare in women's hockey but the unbeaten league leaders never looked back once they broke the deadlock.

Ali Cameron and Stacey DeShields both netted twice while Emma Simmons scored with a fine goal into the top left-hand corner. Michelle Ming and Lisa DeSilva also scored, with DeSilva also missing a penalty stroke.

Swallows beat Cardinals 2-0 in another A League game with Denise Donovan and captain Liz Osbourne scoring the goals. Osbourne was outstanding in the centre of the field as she and Cath Griffiths established control.

Both teams played well in the first half as solid defending by Cardinals made it difficult for Swallows to penetrate. Swallows' vigorous recruiting practices appeared to have paid off with their newest player, Shelly Clement, helping them maintain pressure on the Cardinals defence.

Swifts A and Orioles A played to a 0-0 draw.

In B League action, Bluebirds edged Canaries 2-1 with the winning goal coming from Deborah Sagurs in the second half from a well-executed short corne. Ellen Charney scored the first Bluebirds goal.

Leaders Candinals had to settle for a 0-0 draw against a determined Swallows team whose strategy was to load up their backline. And though the Cardinals attack, led by Jessica Sousa, produced numerous short corners they failed to convert their chances.

Swifts boosted their confidence with a 1-0 victory over Orioles with the winning goal for the youngest team in the league coming from Melissa Durrant.
