Man stole cash from sister and neighbour
Pembroke man $1,400 in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
William G. Thomas of Orchard Grove pleaded guilty to stealing money totalling $800 between June and this month.
Sgt. Peter Giles, prosecuting, told the court that on June 17, 69-year-old Mary Wolfe of Orchard Grove found that money had been taken from her dresser draw.
"She realised that $200 was missing. Thomas admitted to the theft and told Police that he had gained entry through a bedroom window,'' Sgt. Giles said.
On August 3 at 10 a.m. Police received a report from Thomas' sister Sheila Thomas who said $600 was stolen from a locked suitcase in her bedroom between July 29 and August 3.
Sgt. Giles said Thomas told Police he used the money to take out a female friend and buy cocaine.
Duty Counsel Mr. Steven Hankey told the court: "Thomas used the money for a night out on the town and coke. At the time of the offences he was under the influence of both alcohol and drugs. He has not been able to repay the money but would like to do so.'' Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis fined Thomas $500 on the first count, of which $200 will be compensation to Mary Wolfe and $900 on the second count, of which $600 will be compensation to Sheila Thomas.
Mr. Francis also ordered a six-month suspended prison sentence on each count for two years. The sentences are to run concurrently.
