Scott accuses Adderley of `campaign of misinformation' -- Row over cars hots

Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott last night denied he had misled MPs over the importation of oversized Ministerial cars and said he had no intention of resigning.

He hit back after Shadow Transport Minister Erwin Adderley called for him and Transport Minister Ewart Brown to be sacked or resign on Friday in the House of Assembly.

Mr. Scott said he had not misled the House over the importation of a fleet of oversized Peugeot 406's for Ministers and the Premier, and accused Mr.

Adderley of a "campaign of misinformation''.

He promised he would respond in detail to most, if not all of Mr. Adderley's claims in the House on Friday.

Mr. Scott told The Royal Gazette yesterday: "We've been able to spend some time going over his statement to Parliament and, as I thought from hearing it read out once to the House, it is a continuation of his campaign of misinformation.

"There are certainly many inaccuracies in it. We will respond to each and every one of them, and if we don't do them all on Friday, we will over a series of Parliamentary meetings to ensure all the points are answered.

"I was dismayed that when I looked at the details, he either didn't do his homework or elected to misrepresent.'' On December 17, Mr. Adderley asked if Government was buying cars for Ministers who did not have them. Mr. Scott said they would be bought for those who need them, but it would "not happen within the next year''.

The first of the oversized cars arrived and was licensed to be on the road on January 12.

Mr. Scott said yesterday: "In saying I said in Parliament I would not be purchasing cars until next year, what he adroitly left out was that it would be the financial year. The end of the financial year would be March 31. We'll put the record straight.

"I also want to give Dr. Brown (who is off the Island) the chance to sit down with myself and be party to the response.

"I haven't made any misrepresentations, but Mr. Adderley has made misrepresentations, but I am not going to stand down from doing the job I am elected to do because Mr. Adderley is embarking on a campaign of misinformation.

"I can't be held responsible for his utterances but we can show he has worked at redirecting the truth and been very cavalier with the truth.

"He asked on December 17 whether there were any oversized cars in Bermuda at that time and we answered to our knowledge, apart from the Premier's and the Governor's, the only car being used was by the Police.

"When GP6 (the first oversized Peugeot 406 which was licensed on January 12) came he said `aha, you told me there was no oversized cars in Bermuda'. I was answering his question in the context of December and the timeframe.

"He did not ask are we intending to bring in a car that is oversized. He then changed his question after the fact. I can't be held responsible for the fact that he changed the question.

"He now has to be held responsible in the sense that he alluded to the fact that we should suffer for misleading the House.

"We will answer point by point, but what remedy does he ascribe to himself for continuing this campaign? "Never did he ask myself or the Attorney General what section did we use to empower ourselves to bring them in. He now claims neither me nor the Attorney General would answer him when he didn't ask us.'' Alex Scott
