BAA in crusie control

The women's soccer season began yesterday at BAA field as a prelude to the Dudley Eve match, with BAA (formerly Telecom) scoring a convincing win over Somerset Terminators.

BAA applied the early pressure with striker Lisa Young and winger Cassandra Wales causing plenty of trouble for the Terminators' defence. It took BAA just 13 minutes to break the deadlock when midfielder Maria Smith poked the ball home from close range after the Terminators defence failed to clear from a corner on the right.

Wales and the speedy Young kept the Somerset defence -- which included captain Antoinette Williams and Zuleema Mills in the middle -- busy as Wales put a shot against the crossbar in the 38th minute after Young had set her up.

Minutes earlier Earlene Wilkinson pushed forward from defence to put a long range shot just wide.

Raquel Wilson was busy in the Terminators midfield trying to create openings and though they had a brief period of pressure early in the second half when Joy Simons shot wide of the near post, BAA were soon back in control.

Their second goal came in the 52nd minute when they were awarded a freekick on the right side of the penalty box. Leslie Cherry's flighted cross was not handled by goalkeeper Dana Simons and Tanya Semos scrambled the ball over the line from close range.

A foul also resulted in the third BAA goal seven minutes later when Young was fouled inside the box and Wilkinson confidently drove her spotkick to the right of the goalkeeper.

Young was stopped again in the 63rd minute by a hard tackle outside the penalty box, but this time Somerset escaped when Cherry's freekick hit the crossbar with the 'keeper beaten.

ON THE ATTACK -- BAA winger Cassandra Wales gets the ball under control and prepares to mount another raid while Somerset Terminators captain Antionette Williams gets back to defend.
