Smith makes most of Blazers blunders

Keishon Smith struck two of the simplest goals he's ever likely to score as Boulevard were eliminated from the Dudley Eve at White Hill Field yesterday -- despite fielding a much-changed team following the rout by Vasco in their tournament opener on Thursday.

Smith found himself in front of an empty net twice in a four minute spell early in the first half as Boulevard, defeated 5-0 in Thursday's match against the current league leaders, were exposed in defence for a second time in four days.

His goals proved to be enough to set up a Boxing Day meeting with North Village for the right to play Vasco in the two-leg final.

Perhaps it was a warning to his players that nobody's place is safe or simply an attempt to spark new life into a team without a goal in 270 minutes -- but Boulevard coach Herbie Bascome's distinctly different line-up failed to produce the desired response.

Bascome decided to give himself an outing, while Leroy Stevens stepped into a central defensive role alongside Donnie Charles, and Rodney Bascome was brought in up front to partner an out-of-sorts Dwight Warren. Andrew Bascome and Otis Minors were also drafted in as Greg Foggo, Leonard Hypolite and Dennis Wainwright filled the vacancies on the substitutes' bench.

Stevie Wade and George Smith were absent along with Albert Caisey, whose composure at the back has been sorely missed in both the games.

Within 16 minutes the Blazers found themselves two behind and facing another trouncing.

Both the wounds were largely self-inflicted. After 12 minutes Stevens was caught trying to shepherd a harmless through ball back to keeper Andre Hendrickson. The lively Mark Ray saw his opportunity and, pouncing on the pair's indecision, managed to force the ball wide towards the byline, where he clipped a neat cross back to the unmarked Smith, two yards out, who had the easiest of tasks to head home.

Four minutes later, Stevens was again partly at fault, getting in a tangle with team-mate Vernon Eve just outside the Boulevard box. Quincy Aberdeen seized the moment to burst through and chipped the ball over the advancing Hendrickson. The ball was bobbling towards the unguarded goal but Smith ran in to make sure by sweeping it over the line.

Any reply seemed sure to emanate from the inventive Neil Robinson on the left or the battling striker Bascome and the two combined to set up Boulevard's first move of any penetration. Robinson got round the back of a Colts defence in which the central defensive pairing of Makonnen Hollis and Shawn Burgess was rock solid, and slid a ball into the near post which Bascome took with his back to goal, flicked up and clipped back over his shoulder. However, Troy Hall was well-positioned and caught the ball comfortably.

Moments later Herbie Bascome limped off with what appeared to be a groin muscle injury and was replaced by returning college student Richard Todd.

Colts should have put the game beyond Boulevard early in the second half.

Aberdeen's quickly taken free kick caught Dean Boyles napping and Jermaine Belboda, coming in on the left, had only Hendrickson to beat. However, his chip towards the far corner of the goal went agonisingly wide.

Boulevard might have reduced the arrears when Hall was unable to gather under pressure and Minors laid the ball back to Warren, but the striker failed to strike his shot cleanly and Colts managed to clear the danger close to their goal-line.

However, they did get some reward for a half of greater industry and possession three minutes from the end when Robinson's long-range effort deflected up and over the Colts rearguard and Andrew Bascome volleyed in from six yards.
