Colts show a touch of class

Devonshire Colts coach Darren Lewis came off of the bench to play between the sticks in the absence of regular goalkeeper Troy Hall at White Hill Field yesterday.

And while Lewis was impressive throughout, even moreso was his defence as they limited the Boulevard attack to no more than a handful of shots.

In sharp contrast, Colts front-runners applied the pressure non-stop and as such it was Devonshire who ran out comfortable winners.

Boulevard were unlucky to lose their play-making skipper, Dwight Warren, as early as the 18th minute after a strong tackle left him injured. Replacing him was the speedy O.J. Minors who worked with veteran Dean Boyles and Vernon Phillips up front.

Colts had a handful of chances before they eventually struck in the 42nd minute through Jerry Laws.

Before that Keishon Smith shot wide from 15 yards in the eighth minute and Sullivan Philips rose high at the back post in the 11th minute only to see his header drop short of goal before being cleared.

Then Laws positioned himself well in the 27th minute to get his head to a free kick but he couldn't connect cleanly.

The Blazers tried to catch Colts on the counter-attack and they were unlucky in the 20th minute when Stevie Wade's cross rolled agonisingly across the face of the goal with Taur Caisey poaching.

Some good control from Caisey created space for a shot in the 38th minute but his effort just missed from 18 yards.

Colts' goal finally came three minutes before the break following a burst of pace down the left from Keishon Smith who crossed perfectly into Law's path.

Laws made a fine run through the middle of Boulevard's defence before beating Andre Hendrickson low to his left.

That goal gave Colts momentum going into the break and soon after the restart Hendrickson had to come quickly off his line to stop a firm header from Phillips. Marvin Belboda would have added another for Colts in the 55th minute had not Wilson been there to clear off the line.

There was also a goalmouth scramble in the 65th minute in which Lewis had five efforts blocked in quick succession by Hendrickson, Mitchell Trott and the goalpost as Colts kept up the pressure.

Belboda would eventually find the net to secure Colts all three points as he finished off a tremendous solo effort, in which he held off two defenders, by hammering home from six yards in the 75th minute.

Substitute Joseph Butterfield had a golden oppurtunity to make it three in in the 85th minute but he failed to connect at the back post with Hendrickson beaten.
