Daniel Augustus made no excuses for his disappointing showing at this week’s Mayfair Inn Open.

The Bermudian professional failed to make the cut at the 54-hole event that concluded at the par 72 Mayfair Country Club layout in Sanford, Florida yesterday.

Augustus got off to a horrendous start after carding an eight-over-par, 80 during Monday’s opening round, which included nine-bogeys and a solitary birdie at the par 4, 13th.

He fared much better in the second round with a one-over-par, 73 that contained two birdies and three bogeys.

However, it still was not enough as he missed the cut competing in his first tournament of the year.

“Everyone had to play under the same conditions, so I shouldn’t have any excuses, which I don’t,” Augustus said.

“I played poorly, it’s that simple.”

To compound matters, the 33-year-old had being feeling confident prior to the tournament on the back of some good form.

“I was feeling good leading up to it,” he added.

“I had been playing well and practice sessions had been going well.

“It’s a bit abrupt of a change to the way that I have been playing recently. I wasn’t expecting it at all.

“It was rude awakening and humbling, which is what golf does. Golf humbles you and lets you know that it’s still in charge.”

American Alex Weiss won the tournament by one shot over nearest rival and compatriot Velten Meyer.

Cooper Musselman rounded off the podium a further four shots back in third respectively.

Augustus is now determined to iron out the flaws in his game moving forward.

“I’m back on the golf course training and trying to adjust to playing in cold weather better,” he said.

“I’m learning to hit off of different lies and making sure my numbers are correct, as they were not due to me leaving the ball above the hole a lot, leaving myself on the wrong side of the hole a lot.

“It was not so much about hitting a bad shot. But if it was one yard too long for some of these pin positions, even if you were putting for birdie, you were going to make a bogey at best.

“So I’m just taking this as a learning experience, as a lesson, and I’m going to go forward from here.”
