Anniversary for Guiding movement
month with a week-long programme of activities which include a special visit from Mrs. Gill Clay, granddaughter of the international movement's founder, Lady Baden-Powell.
A Thanksgiving service at the Anglican Cathedral on October 23 will bring together all local companies of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, and Young Leaders.
In addition to Mrs. Clay, visiting dignitaries will include the Chief Commonwealth Commissioner, Mrs. Jane Garside, who will be the guest speaker at the service, and Commissioners and Trainers from the United Kingdom, Canada and the Caribbean.
On October 24 the visitors will combine sightseeing with an official visit to the Hog Bay Park campsite, where Scout Association members (who also share the site) assisted by the Guide Association will stage a special display.
On October 28, Guide Association president Lady Waddington will be the guest speaker at a gala dinner to be held at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. On October 29, a large rally will take place on the playing field of the Bermuda High School for Girls playing field, in the area of the Guide Association headquarters, known as the Asser property. Demonstrations of many aspects of Guiding will take place, including camp craft, knots, and buddy burner cooking.
On this day also, the dedication of a Bermuda stone birdbath with a fascinating history will take place at rear of the Asser property.
"The birdbath was built in 1930 by Lord Baden-Powell while he and Lady Baden-Powell were guests of Mrs. James Storrow, an American who lived at Fairwinds in Tucker's Town,'' Island Commissioner Mrs. Florenz Maxwell related. "They came here to celebrate their joint birthdays -- February 22, which we now commemorate as Thinking Day.'' The birdbath remained an integral part of the Fairwinds garden until past Island Commissioner Mrs. Freda Olivey learned that the property was being sold. At her suggestion, Mrs. Maxwell approached Mrs. Storrow's great, great niece, Mrs. Sara Zug, who graciously agreed to present the birdbath to the Guide Association.
"We are simply delighted to have this valuable memorabilia, and it is particularly appropriate that Lord Baden-Powell's granddaughter, Mrs. Gill Clay, should be coming to dedicate it in Mrs. Storrow's memory during our 75th anniversary celebrations,'' the Island Commissioner said.
With regard to the Thanksgiving service on October 23, and the rally on October 29, Mrs. Maxwell said invitations are required, but because of the great numbers of past members of the Guiding movement, and the possibility of missing names out, the Guide Association is not issuing invitations. Instead, it is asking all who are interested in attending these events to complete the forms published in the local press and return them to P.O. Box HM767, Hamilton HMCX, or drop them off at the Bermuda Youth Library on Church Street as soon as possible.
