Bridal shower on the run Pre-wedding workout a special surprise for bride-to-be Kelly
Kelly Creighton brought new meaning to the term ‘runaway bride’ after doing something out of the ordinary for her bridal shower.Ladies in The Weekenders running group surprised her by dressing up in white running gear, while the men donned black fitness attire and took her on a bridal shower run at 6am.Ms Creighton was made to wear a veil and sash throughout the 4.6-mile run.She said: “I was completely surprised and as it was so early in the morning I was oblivious to the fact that the ladies were dressed in white and the gents in black.“When they all shouted ‘surprise’ it was so much fun. The group celebrates birthdays [and other holidays] but I had not tuned into that fact they would throw a celebration for my upcoming wedding.“It was so funny as there were maybe 12 to 15 of us, so on some parts of the run I was by myself and whenever anyone would pass me I’m sure they thought I was crazy [for going] out for my morning run with a veil and sash.”Ms Creighton will marry Luis Portillo in a ceremony in Ireland next Saturday.Group leader Liz Craig came up with the bridal shower concept and decided to surprise Ms Creighton, who has been running with the group for six or seven years. Ms Craig said the hardest part was working to ensure the bride-to-be would turn up that day.“I had a plan of action just in case [and] got one of the girls to text Kelly the day before to say she needed a ride into town for the run as she was having bike issues.“It worked [and] I got a text at 5.15am to say ‘mission accomplished’, Kelly was on her way. [It was] a huge sigh of relief.”To make the day extra special, Ms Craig used a save-the-date photo of Ms Creighton and her fiance and attached it to their shirts as running bibs. She said: “The props — veil, boa and sash — were leftovers from Kelly’s hen party last week and I just added more balloons. I was also a bit worried in case someone let the cat out of the bag, but they didn’t [and] it was a huge surprise.”Another running group member Deborah Pharoah-Williams made a sign, which showed a bride resembling Ms Creighton, sporting a pair of running shoes and holding her water bottle as she headed off for her nuptials.Member Natalie Dyrli said: “Our running group is an incredible group of people from all walks of life here in Bermuda. The one thing we have in common is our love of running, but in some strange way we have become more than just a running club.“We have forged amazing friendships and seem to have this unique bond that brings us all together. We support each other through thick and thin, celebrate each other’s victories and lift each other up when we are feeling defeated.“People often ask us if we actually ever get any running done because we spend so much time posing for pictures.”Ms Craig said she was happy to have organised the bridal shower run as it “just fit the bill perfectly” in lead up to Ms Creighton’s big day.“I have no idea if one has been done before or not, I just thought it was a good idea,” she said. “I wanted to do my last run with Kelly as a single lady before heading out. It was a fabulous run and such good fun.”
