No pressure on us, insists star striker Todd
Bermuda women’s national team striker Shuntae Todd is carrying the team’s expectation and goal threat with ease ahead of the NatWest Island Games.Todd, who has been prolific in front of goal for North Village Lady Rams in recent seasons, is expected to lead the line for the Gombey Warriors as they pursue gold medal glory.Despite being the host nation, Todd doesn’t believe there is any extra pressure on the side who take on visiting Island’s Hitra and Greenland.“The preparations are going along well, the training has been intense but we’re sticking to the game plan and getting ready for the tournament,” she said.“There’s a bit a pressure that comes with any major competition but we just need to stay focused and play to our strengths and we will be fine.“We’re as prepared as we can be, we have been out here working hard and in the end hopefully we come away with gold.“The talking will be on the pitch and we are keen to get off on the right foot.”The three teams will play in a round robin, with each team playing their opponents twice before a play-off style format comes into play.Three seasons ago Todd netted 53 goals in all competitions on her way to claiming the MVP award and the League and Cup double with Village. And with the likes of Cheyra Bell, Jessica Furtado, Stacy Babb, and Wayneisha Bean also expected to be named in coach Naquita Robinson’s side, Bermuda should have no shortage of experience.“Personally there isn’t any pressure on me at all, I’m enjoying football at the moment and I can’t wait to get out there on the field representing Bermuda,” added Todd.“Obviously there’s some sort of pressure playing at home for your country, but I take things like this in my stride and look to make the most of it.“It’s not really so much of an issue for us not knowing who our opposition is and how they play, it’s really up to us to go out and set the tone for every match we play in.“They most likely have some good players, but the majority of our side have international experience so we’re equipped for what lies ahead.“We have a very good team, a mix of youth and experience, and to know that we are familiar with the conditions and the surface, so we’re at an advantage in more ways than one.”The Island Games opening ceremony will be held at the National Sports Centre at 6pm on Saturday, with the women’s team kicking off their campaign the following day at 5pm.
