Onions hang tough, then win by a landslide

performance to defeat the touring Bristol University in a 10-a-side match by the score of 42-25 yesterday at National Sports Club.

The Onions were trailing 22-7 at half-time after a sluggish start as the Bristol students put on an aggressive display of attacking, running rugby by constantly moving the ball into open spaces.

The first-half score would most certainly have been at least 10 points higher for Bristol but for the tenacious tackling of Scott Correia who brought down student after student.

At 15-0 down, Mike Montgomery made a good break from a line-out and gave a scoring pass to Colin Lunn to reduce the deficit to 15-7. Bristol scored a breakaway try in the last minute of the first half to make the score 22-7.

Having been fired up by coach Derek Hurdle at the interval, the Onions came out and looked a completely different team. The ever-present Correia scored quickly in the second half between the posts after Pat Jones had dazzled the Bristol defence and Andrew Correia converted, bringing the score to 22-14.

This provided enough motivation for the Onions to score another four tries with no reply in the last 15 minutes. Tries came from Scott Correia, Pat Jones, Shane DeSilva and Andre Simons.

Jones made two superb touch-line conversions to add salt to the already sunburnt wounds of the Bristol students.

The students now face the national team in a 15-a-side game on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Nationals. The national team is being captained for the first time by Alvin Harvey of Teachers.

Team: McNiven, Cook, Forsythe, Gorbutt, Sheppard, Field, McLellan, Nicoll, Davis, Oliver, Gorman, Scott Correia, Conway, Harvey, Whitehead. Replacements: Harris, Raistrick, Andrew Correia, Walsh, Heaney, DeMille, Cozens.
