Boulevard advance to semis despite defeat

A brilliant save in the closing minutes by Hewonnie Brown to a scorcher from Lionel Furbert saved the Bermuda Football Association the headache of possibly having to decide who would join Dandy Town in the semifinals.

For if the match had ended 3-1 -- the same score that Town beat Somerset -- then it would have left Somerset and Boulevard with both an identical goal difference and goal average.

Either a playoff or the flip of the coin would have been used.

Town, having already qualified, built a comfortable 2-0 lead at the half only to see Boulevard come charging back after the restart to stay in the match.

The deadlock was broken in the 18th minute when a quick Town break saw Carlos Smith feed the ball wide to the surging Antoine Cannonier on the right and he scored with a low shot.

Both teams created chances in a lively first half but it was Town who scored a critical second goal three minutes before the break when an inswinging corner by Walter Musson on the right saw Brown failed to hold onto the ball at the near post and Carlos Smith capitalised.

Boulevard looked more determined in the second half and they were rewarded with an important goal in the 51st minute when Stevie Wade took a pass from Dwight Warren and drove in a low shot.

Brown redeemed himself with that important late save and in seven minutes of stoppage time -- because time was lost when the fifth ball of the night supplied by the BFA was lost and a club ball had to be used to finish the match -- the match hung in the balance.

Two Boulevard players were booked for dissent, Leroy Stevens early in the second half and Kenny Hill, senselessly, five minutes into injury time.
