And a spokesman for the Bermuda Land Development Company Limited, which has organised the competition, yesterday said because mailed submissions were still arriving in "considerable numbers'', the winning name will not be announced until early next month.

The former Base lands were originally expected to be renamed this week.

Some East Enders have expressed strong opposition to having the area referred to as anything other than St. David's.

But the BLDC has promised that St. David's will be a part of the final name selected.

And the spokesman said that whatever name was selected would not interfere with the return of the St. David's place names that were lost when the Base was built in the 1940s.

"For example,'' he said, "one person has suggested that the marina just east of Marginal Wharf be called Higgs Bay, as it once was. There is no reason why that can't happen.'' ATTACKER FINED $900 CTS Attacker fined $900 Twenty-two-year-old Paul Marshall was fined a total of $900 yesterday after admitting charges of assault and wilful damage.

Marshall, of Middle Town Drive, Pembroke, appeared in Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

He admitted two charges of unlawful assault and one charge of wilful and unlawful destruction of a motorcyle.

Sgt. Phil Taylor, prosecuting, told Senior Magistrate Will Francis that last Saturday morning Marshall went to see his ex-girlfriend at a house on Swansbay Hill, Pembroke.

When no-one came to the door, Marshall began to destroy his ex-girlfriend's bike causing damage valued at $800.

"His ex-girlfriend then came outside and talked to Marshall who became aggravated and grabbed her by the neck and threw her to the ground,'' Sgt.

Taylor said. "A man then came outside and was attacked by Marshall, causing abrasions and cuts.'' Mr. Francis fined Marshall $300 for each charge and said $800 should go to the ex-girlfriend as compensation.

DALE AND ARCHIE SPEAK EDC Dale and Archie speak Two local writers concerned with researching and preserving Bermudian history will speak at Bermuda College tonight.

Former Bermuda College president Archie Hollis Hallett and Dellwood principal Dale Butler will give a presentation on the joys and tribulations of research and publishing in Bermuda.

The presentation, entitled "An Evening With Archie and Dale: Putting Bermuda's Past into Print'', is part of the Bermuda College Library's Third Annual Heritage Lecture.

Dr. Hallett has compiled four books documenting Bermuda's history from as early as 1612.

Dr. Hallett has established Juniperhill Press in conjunction with his wife, Clara, who is a professional genealogist.

Mr. Butler concentrates on providing printing and publishing services to local writers.

The lecture is geared toward providing detailed information about the process of researching and writing about one's past.

The presentation begins at 7 p.m. in the New Hall Lecture Theatre. Admission is $2 for Friends of the College Library Fund members and $5 for others, with proceeds going to the Fund.

APPEAL TO BOAT OWNERS POL Appeal to boat owners Marine Police are waiting for owners to claim several punts and other marine craft have been recovered.

Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning said the craft, including a "365 John Hall'' design windsurfer and a yellow paddle wheeler, were recovered from around Hamilton Harbour during the last few weeks.
