Fray ton earns him Somerset call-up
President’s XI, 289 for 9, beat Vice President’s XI, 179 all out, by 110 runsImpressing the selectors was the order of the day in Somerset’s one and only trial as Terryn Fray and Kevin Hurdle both got calls ups to be in the challengers’ Cup Match XI to head to Wellington Oval with the task of wrestling the Cup from St. George’s.Fray scored 105 in his innings for the President’s XI in an opening stand of 214 with Dion Stovell (103) to sway the voting in his favour, although Chris Douglas, who was dropped, didn’t do himself any favours, complaining about an lbw decision that went against him in his dismissal.Hurdle has also been recalled for Somerset and will certainly share the new ball with fellow pacer Malachi Jones following another sterling performance with both the bat and ball.In his spell of 15 overs, the Flatts player took three wickets and backed his bowling up with a quick fire 30, dispatching balls to all parts of the ground to cement his place. It is just reward for Hurdle, who was denied his recall last year after some lightning quick overs that saw him take five wickets, only to be turned down by the selectors.Kamau Leverock will also make his debut for Somerset, with the PHC batsman following in the footsteps of uncle Dwayne Leverock. One debate on the side was whether or not to take spinners Derrick Brangman and Del Hollis, the two leading wicket takers in the Premier Division this term, and both were left out, much to the dismay of some.In the end there were few surprises in the set up of the team according to Somerset Cricket Club president Alfred Maybury who was pleased he wasn’t involved in making the final decision.“They had a lot of discussions on strategy and how to go about getting the result, so it was hard but in the end they have made good decisions,” said Maybury. “I know the selectors had a tough time picking the side, and fortunately for me I wasn’t in the war room, but I think we have selected a side that can win the cup back.”“We are very happy with the side we are taking to St. George’s, I think it’s a team that can go there and get the trophy.”With both sides now picked, the Somerset boss isn’t focused on who the champions have selected, rather he is itching to see how his troops approach the titanic task ahead.“I haven’t really looked at their team, but it will be a challenging match for both sides. I’ve focused on us, but knowing how they are they won’t allow us to come down there and just walk out with the Cup, it will be a great match.”Somerset: J Edness (capt), S Outerbridge (v capt), D Stovell, T Fray (colt), J Tucker, D Darrell, M Jones, J Gilbert, K Leverock (colt), K Hurdle, J Robinson.
