Bermuda CableVision has been instructed to black out World Cup matches which were to be shown on the SportsMax and ESPN channels.

But they are hoping to show the games on channel 402.

CableVision CEO Terry Roberson noted that Bermuda Broadcasting Company had obtained the exclusive rights for Bermuda.

BBC CEO Rick Richardson explained that, in addition to airing all matches on Channel Seven, his company would also have its digital feed on the UHF band — for viewers who don’t have cable.

However, hopes to get both ABC and ESPN air the games in Bermuda have been dashed.

BBC is affiliated with both entities.

Mr Richardson said the networks were concerned that FIFA would take legal action against them.

“The BBC contract with IMC (International Media Content) gives us latitude to use other feeds and we tried to clear the way for CableVision and others,” said Mr. Richardson. “However, IMC would have to give FIFA the assurances they require.”

Earlier, Mr Roberson said CableVision had been working with BBC with the aim of receiving a High Definition (HD) feed from them.

“Once this is received, Bermuda CableVision will be able to show the World Cup in HD for free on channel 402. As soon as there is an update, we will notify the public.

“ . . . we will continue to work expeditiously with Bermuda Broadcasting on this partnership.”

In a statement released today, IMC confirmed that their company, through agreement with FIFA and the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), are the exclusive owners of the television broadcast rights.

“This agreement means that the only company authorised to broadcast the 2014 FIFA World Cup on over-the-air or cable television is Bermuda Broadcasting Co. Ltd.

“Please note that NO other over-the-air or cable television broadcaster has television broadcast rights for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and transmission of ANY of the matches, either live or delayed from the 2014 FIFA World Cup on any over-the-air and/or cable channel other than the authorised broadcaster stated above is strictly prohibited.

“IMC is committed to protect the broadcast rights of the authorised broadcaster named above and requests that the rights acquired are observed. Any infringement of these rights will be pursued by IMC.”
