Industrial action has been called by CableVision workers, effective today, over what the Bermuda Industrial Union called “long-standing, festering” disputes with management.“Workers have decided to cease working until we can get some sort of agreement,” BIU division organiser Louis Somner last night told The Royal Gazette.Staff are said to be downing tools in an effort to bring about third-party arbitration, over what Mr Somner called a failure by CableVision management to address concerns over wage reviews, a lack of training, and alleged violations of immigration policy by a non-Bermudian manager at the company.Asked if cable service could be affected, Ms Somner said: “I wouldn’t see why, but if they have disruptions at CableVision, there may not be anybody there to deal with it.” The union has about 40 members working at the company, he said.The decision came after an urgent meeting called at BIU headquarters. Updates are expected today from BIU head Chris Furbert, Mr Somner said.
