Youngsters dominate in Chicago race
Triathletes from Bermuda's TriHedz junior triathlon club dominated the world's largest triathlon event in Chicago for the fifth consecutive year.
A total of 22 juniors aged from eight-years-old to 14 competed with more than 750 others in the MacDonald's Kids Triathlon on Saturday, winning five of the six age group categories in which they competed. In severe weather conditions the 11 to 14-year-old triathletes swam a shortened 100 metre course in Lake Michigan, cycled eight kilometres and ran two kilometres along Chicago's lakefront. Due to a lightning storm, the swim for the seve to 10-year-olds was cancelled, turning the race into a four-kilometre cycle and one-kilometre run duathlon.
Alex Godfrey won the boys seven to eight-year-old category.
Ricky Sousa and Justin Collis came first and second respectively in the boys nine to 10 race. There was also a one-two finish for Bermuda in the 11-12s, with Thomas Godfrey and James Adams taking top honours - with Bermuda taking four of the top five places in this race.
And in the 13-14 boys race TriHedz took the top six spots, lead by Adam Petty and Geoffrey Smith.
The girls took second and third place in the 11-12s through Caitlin Conyers and Ally Bolton and there was yet another first for Bermuda in the 13-14s with Flora Duffy.
On Sunday in the longer course event - 750 metres swim, 22 kilometre cycle and five kilometre run - eight juniors competed, with the strongest showing in the male 12 to 14-year-old category where Bermuda claimed the top five spots. Adam Petty led the field, followed by Geoffrey Smith, Coyatito Smith, Kharmari Greaves and Matthew Godfrey.
Dominque Nannette, aged 14 but competing the 15 to 19 category placed 4th overall.
Flora Duffy comfortably won the female 12-14 age group while Robyn Dickinson placed second in the female 15-19-year-olds.
Several senior triathletes accompanying the group also put in outstanding performances with Neil de St Croix leading the Bermuda contingent with a second place in the mens 35 to 39 age group and Steve Petty placing third in the mens 45 to 49 age group.
