BIBA's EXPO 2000 eyes young Bermudian talent

Young Bermudians are to be shown the opportunities international business can offer them in their careers at an exhibition to be held later this year.

The Bermuda International Business Association will host its third annual International Business Week and Expo 2000 on September 23.

The organisers hope to attract thousands of Bermudians and residents to help them learn more about international business in Bermuda.

Chairman of BIBA's local marketing committee, Duane Dill, said: "This event is designed to increase the local community's knowledge about the international business industry in Bermuda, and emphasise the interdependence between the industry and all aspects of the community, particularly the tourism industry.'' The first Expo was held in 1997, and will be the culmination of International Business Week 2000, which will begin on Sunday, September 17. Last year the week was interrupted by Hurricane Gert.

The event is part of a campaign by BIBA to help bridge the perceived divide between international business and the average Bermudian worker.

The organisers hope that Expo 2000 will showcase opportunities offered to well qualified Bermudians in many sectors.

Deborah Middleton of Conyers Dill and Pearman, one of the week's supporters said: "There are wonderful opportunities for well qualified Bermudians in information technology, and human resources that do not require a law degree.'' Nina Jacobs, BIBA's local programmes coordinator said: "Expo 2000 is going to highlight all sorts of new careers in the e-commerce, information technology and telecommunications industries.'' Expo to build bridges to community Local and international businesses have come out in support of the scheme. At a press conference yesterday, Mr. Dill announced that support had been gathered from ACE Bermuda, Appleby Spurling and Kempe, Bank of Bermuda, Centre Solutions, Conyers Dill and Pearman, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Arthur Morris, Christensen & Co, AAC Integrated Communications and Bermuda Land Development Company.

Mr. Dill said: "The aim of the Expo is to facilitate increased interaction between the international business industry and the community.'' It will be held in a special tent set up at City Hall car park.

For the future: BIBA's upcoming EXPO 2000 will try to bridge bridges between the Island's emerging labour force and opportunities within the international business sector, a press conference was told yesterday.
