By Marina MelloInternet speeds are being boosted in Bermuda and subscribers won’t have to pay extra money for the faster service.Telecoms providers yesterday confirmed they planned to offer customers free upgrades from six megabits per second to 8Mbps DSL.BTC this month is launching 8Mbps and 10Mbps DSL service. It revealed it planned to offer customers who already have 6Mbps an upgrade to 8Mbps at no cost.“BTC’s free upgrade programme for 6Mb customers will begin at months end. Further details will be released then,” a BTC spokesperson said yesterday.BTC is a subsidiary of KeyTech along with Internet service provider Logic.A spokeswoman for internet service provider (ISP) North Rock said yesterday the company planned to honour BTC’s upgrade: “North Rock ’s 6Mbps DSL rate is $119.95 per month and BTC is offering these customers to upgraded to 8Mbps DSL at no additional charge. We will also honour this and move them from 6Mbps DSL to 8Mbps DSL for the same $119.95 per month price.”North Rock said its pricing for the 10Mbps DSL will be $129.95.BTC received approval this summer from Government to launch the new 8Mbps and 10Mbps services.At the time, there was concern raised that BTC was adding more expensive services rather than replacing existing slower services as has been done in other countries.Bermuda CableVision has also applied to increase its Internet speeds.“Presently our 20MB product for high-speed data is at the Telecommunications Communications for approval,” Terry Roberson, Bermuda CableVision general manager, said last month.Pricing for the planned new 20Mbps service was not disclosed but Cablevision’s Ultimate High Speed Internet of 8Mbps costs $55 per month, not including the ISP’s charge.
