A Pembroke man was jumped by a trio of robbers late on July 8, then was forced to have his home robbed shortly after.Treadwell Smith, 26, also of Pembroke, was part of the trio who robbed David Loving after he left his work at Arnold’s Market and walked home on Underhill Crescent.Crown Council Larissa Burgess told Magistrates’ Court the incident occurred at 11.30pm, after Mr Loving saw a man sitting on a wall while walking home. The two had a cigarette, then headed in the direction of the Coalition for the Protection of Children, where Mr Loving saw another man in the area.Ms Burgess said to the court Smith, the third man who appeared, spoke with the second man in the area, then held Mr Loving from behind, allowing his pockets to be searched allegedly by the other two men.Mr Loving’s keys to his apartment, keys to his sister’s apartment and $35 cash were stolen from him, and he was forced to show the robbers his home, where they robbed him again, the court heard.The items stolen from Mr Loving’s home were $150, coins, clothes, sneakers and a BlackBerry worth $900. Mr Loving was then allegedly told by the robbers if he telephoned the police, they would “come back for him.”The only items taken and later recovered were Mr Loving’s cell phone and keys, according to Ms Burgess.Smith initially pleaded not guilty and attempted to reason with Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, asking for bail, he said: “I got caught in the wrong crowd of people. I just wanted to ask if I can be on bail. I have two young children. I’ll do anything. I’ll take the ankle bracelet and check in at the police station.”Mr Warner rejected Smith’s request for bail and ordered a social inquiry report. Following this, Smith immediately changed his plea to guilty.Without consulting the duty legal counsel in court, Smith asked Mr Warner: “Can I just change it to guilty now please?”After Mr Warner read the charge a second time, Smith then consulted the duty counsel and asked again to change his plea to guilty, admitting: “The only thing I took was clothes, that’s it.”Mr Warner remanded Smith into custody until August 29, in order for a social inquiry report to be completed for sentencing. Two other men have denied robbery in connection to the matter and are due to stand trial at Magistrates’ Court.
