The front pews at Allen Temple AME Church, Somerset had an extra pulchritudinous glow on Sunday when filed by members and friends of the Alpha Kappa Sorority (AKA) celebrating the 22nd anniversary of the chartering of the Sigma Xi Omega Chapter of the Sorority in Bermuda.AKA was founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. by college educated African-American young women, and now boasts a membership of 260,000 distinguished women with excellent academic records, proven leadership skills and a strong commitment to the global community. The Bermuda chapter was chartered in May, 1990 by the Hon Gloria McPhee (who became the first woman to hold a Cabinet portfolio in Bermuda). She was joined by more than 20 other ladies matriculating at various US universities.Four of the original charter members present for Sunday’s celebration were Mrs. Dawn Simmons, Mrs. Geraldine Lambert, Rev. Dr. Emilygail Dill and Ms. Dejuanna Burrows.Presently headed by Ms. D’Shawn Doars, the Bermuda Chapter is currently soliciting applications for their Bermuda College Scholarships which are offered annually to graduating students from the Berkeley Institute and CedarBridge Academy. Two of Sigma Xi Omega’s signature programmes have been the Hal Jackson’s Talented Teens Competition which highlights young girls between the ages of 13-17 and the Emerging Young Leaders Programme which provides mentoring and service programs for young ladies in Middle School.
