Bermudian fined for cocaine offence in UK

A Bermudian man has landed before the UK courts after yet again after being caught in possession of crack cocaine.Kareem Musson, 31, who is originally from Smith’s, was arrested by police earlier this month after they carried out a search of a home in Ipswich, Suffolk.According to the East Anglia Daily News, officers discovered a small wrap of crack cocaine in Musson’s sock during the search.Appearing at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court this week, Musson pleaded guilty to the charge and said he began using the drug a few weeks ago because it helped him relax. He admitted he had been a regular user of cannabis, but said he was not addicted to crack. He had told police he had bought the drug for £10 ($15) and had put it in his sock to have later in the day.Musson was fined £60 ($90) and ordered him to pay £20 ($30) to the victims’ fund along with £40 ($60) towards prosecution costs. The court also heard that Musson had a previous conviction for drug smuggling after he first arrived in the UK from Bermuda. He was sentenced to a four-year jail term and was released in March 2011. Musson said that, on release, he decided to stay in England because he feared for his own safety if he returned home. He claimed he had been carrying the drugs for a gang and was worried he could be targeted by his former associates for failing to smuggle the drugs in undetected.According to his lawyer, Musson moved up to Ipswich from London three months ago to stay with Bermudian friends, but intended returning to the capital because he could not find a home or employment in Suffolk. As a 19-year-old, Musson was fined $1,000 by a Bermuda magistrate after admitting receiving a stolen motorbike.
