Tucker wants her voice heard as she moves to Francis Patton Primary

On the move: Dr. Gina Tucker

Gina Tucker will become principal of Francis Patton Primary in September despite parents' concerns over her appointment.

The Ministry of Education says its decision to have her replace current principal Gloria Martin will stand.

And Dr. Tucker says she is ready for the job, despite being removed as head of Victor Scott Primary last year.

"I think it's important that people hear my voice and hear my commitment to the education of our young people," she said. "I am committed to Bermuda's young people and putting our children first. We have to work together to do that.

"Despite comments that are being made, Victor Scott had significant improvements in culture and school as well as academics. The children improved significantly, yes. I don't want us to lose sight of it. I am willing to work with all persons.

"I think parents are basing their comments on hearsay and on not knowing me as a leader in their school. I am very open to suggestions, very much prepared to listen to their concerns and their desires for the school and I would work to help them because it's their school. Work with all of us to achieve the goals for the school and to make Francis Patton the best option for the [Bailey's] Bay community."

Dr. Tucker is currently a Ministry official. She was dismissed from Victor Scott Primary amid controversy last June after school counsellor Anthony Peets filed a grievance against her.

The Ministry of Education announced last month that Mrs. Martin would move to Dalton E. Tucker Primary, and Dr. Tucker was to be her replacement.

Parents organised a meeting with Education Minister El James and Education Commissioner Wendy McDonell to voice their concerns over the move.

"There were really great things that happened at Victor Scott," Dr. Tucker said. "I don't want us to diminish the achievements of the students. The teachers, staff, children and parents need to be applauded and commended for where they came from and what they did achieve.

"It's very important that we recognise that work that took place. I have no doubt that I would be able to work with the staff and the parents [at Francis Patton] effectively. I recognise that we have to work together. I have an open-door policy.

"I am here to help the teachers and support the teachers. People have to be willing to hear that. I will speak directly to the parents on how we can work and contribute. I just serve. I just come to help and organise to achieve the goals.

"It's really going in and talking with the parents and teachers and determining how Francis Patton can grow. I don't think there's a principal that's liked by everybody on the planet. I don't think that that's normal leadership."
