Chance to learn how to find family roots
Family history will be at the heart of an educational programme and exhibition organised by the National Museum of Bermuda.
Tracing Our Roots / Routes will include online presentations, workshops and other resources to promote research.
Lisa Howie, the museum’s director of learning and engagement, said: “Tracing Our Roots / Routes responds to the popularity of personal genealogy research and our community’s growing interest in learning about Bermuda’s history.”
She told the public: “Our expert panellists will provide you with the tools and strategies to research and document your personal story.”
The series will culminate with Bermuda’s Family Scrapbook – a project which will be displayed online and on the walls of the museum.
Elena Strong, the NMB executive director, invited people to “share your family story and photographs to Bermuda’s Family Scrapbook. See yourself in the National Museum of Bermuda”.
A museum spokeswoman said: “During the global pandemic, interest in genealogy research accelerated.
“While sheltering in place, people looked for new ways to connect with their family and their past.
“NMB’s genealogy database, available to members and students, was used more than ever in the past year.”
Experts from Bermuda Archives, the Bermuda National Library and the Smithsonian Institution will join the NMB to help people develop skills for effective and sensitive research that will help them find and chart information about their family history.
The programme will start with a webinar on February 17 when Kenyatta Berry, an American genealogist, author, lawyer and television host, will talk about strategies to interview relatives, use genealogy methodology and access US and immigration records for those who left Bermuda for the United States.
People who take part will get an interactive “Family Discovery Toolkit”.
