A new scholarship has been created to honour the memory of an insurance executive who died after being paralysed in a car accident.Zurich has funded the $15,000 one-year scholarship named after Shernelle Outerbridge, the former CEO of Zurich Investment Services.The scholarship, set up by the Association of Bermuda International Companies (ABIC), in partnership with Zurich, was awarded this week to 17-year-old Michelle Onyia, of Sandys.Ms Onyia studied at The Berkeley Institute and plans to major in mathematics at Canada’s Mount Saint Vincent University.“ABIC is very pleased to be able to offer this new scholarship to a deserving Bermudian wishing to pursue finance or business studies and we thank Zurich for their support and contribution,” said ABIC Education Awards chairman Roy Fellowes. “This award is fitting tribute to Mrs Outerbridge’s character and achievements, and her own contribution to business in Bermuda.”A statement issued on behalf of the Outerbridge family, which includes husband Irving and the couple’s three children, said: “As she did so often in her life, so she does in her death. Shernelle gives us love, hope, inspiration and guidance. And now through this scholarship, in a spiritual sense, she continues to give and make others happy.“The family would like to thank Zurich for this kind gesture in awarding this scholarship in her name. It’s our hope that the future recipients of this generous award will be inspired to do great things and make this world a better place as Shernelle did.”Mrs Outerbridge was in a car crash in January 2011 that left her paralysed from the waist down. She spent six gruelling months in hospital and rehab in the US, but died suddenly last July after becoming ill only a week after she returned home to St David’s.The award in her name, which will be awarded on an annual basis, is in addition to the two-year scholarship ABIC already awards annually.The ABIC Education Awards programme is one of the largest and most broadly supported scholarship programmes in Bermuda, providing more than $500,000 each year to Bermudian students who are pursuing higher education at accredited four-year, degree-granting colleges and universities.
