Stephen Allen and Jennifer Alen successfully defended their Lindo’s to Lindo’s 10K road race titles yesterday, and both made decisive winning moves at the same point on the course.Many of the 300 or so runners in the popular race saw the edge taken off their times in the cool conditions, which also featured a gusting wind occasionally swirling on parts of the route. Race winner Allen was 50 seconds down on his 2012 victory pace.He was one of three of the Island’s leading long distance runners who kept close company for much of the way between the start line at Lindo’s superstore in Warwick and the finish at Lindo’s in Devonshire.Chayce Smith and last year’s runner-up Sean Trott, together with Allen, opened up a lead on the rest of the field. When Allen reached the four-mile point, and the testing Collector’s Hill incline, he applied more speed and opened up daylight between himself and Smith. He kept his advantage for the remaining two miles, including up a further major incline at Chaingate Hill, and ran out the winner in 33 minutes 29 seconds. Smith was second in 33.45, while Trott was third in 34.11Afterwards Allen said: “We were running together as a group and I was hoping that someone would go ahead. Going up Collector’s Hill I gained a few yards and kept going. It was a good day for racing because it was cool. It was a bit windy but it wasn’t a problem.”In the women’s race Jennifer Alen and Deon Breary led through the opening miles. Just as in the men’s race, it was on Collector’s Hill that the race was settled. Defending champion Alen broke clear of Breary and kept the momentum going to secure victory in 40 minutes 41 seconds, finishing 13th overall. One place behind was Breary in 41.22, with Nubelia Simas the third woman in 45.11.Alen said: “It was nice to be running again and I felt comfortable. The times were a bit slower this year, although I wasn’t really aware of the wind.”Top juniors (under 19) in the race were Christopher Ricca, 13, in 47.57, and in the female category Rebecca Harrison, 13, in 53.25. Open age group (20-39) men’s winner was Ryan Wilson, fifth overall in 37.47, while the women’s open winner was Martina Olcheski-Bell in 46.21.In the master’s category, fourth runner home Christopher Harris took the men’s title in 36.18, while leading woman master was Helen Gullick in 49.24. The men’s senior masters’ title went to Christopher Jones in 44.13, while the women’s title was won by Zina Jones in 49.47.The Lindo’s to Lindo’s race strives to recognise the achievements of the athletes aged 60 and over, and this year had three age divisions stretching beyond the senior masters’ category. The top veteran 60-64 was Mark Albouy in 49.06, while the first woman in that category was Maria Duffy in 52.28. In the senior vet 65-69 division Keith Chiappa was first in 50.24, while top woman was Peggy Couper in 55.50. And in the experienced veteran division, for those aged 70 and above, Mike Rickards, 71, scooped the honours in 58.09.Hundreds of people took part in a competitive and non-competitive four-mile walk held in conjunction with the main road race. The four-mile competitive race walk was won by Sinclair Smith in 41.04, from L Sinah Simons (41.23) and Gary Young (41.42).
