Businessman slams BLDC
A businessman in Southside has slammed Bermuda Land Development Corporation (BLDC) after spending $30,000 on refurbishments only to learn that his building could be demolished.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said BLDC had continually added on charges since he moved his business into Marginal Wharf. He said the lease was very reasonable but then an electricity meter and water meter were added and then a bill for land came for several hundred dollars for his modest space.
But the last straw was when the toilets were broken and faeces flooded the floor but when he complained someone at BLDC said repairs cost a lot of money and BLDC might close them down.
"Enough is enough," said the businessman who said a lot of other workers used those toilets. BLDC CEO Patrick Jones said there were plans to demolish the run down buildings although he could give no a timetable nor could he say what would be put in their place.
He said there were concessions to get businesses to come to Marginal Wharf but the leases were short term as the plan was to move those businesses into the new business centre.
"We have to raise rents to get closer to market rents. We are in business like everybody else."
He said he was annoyed to be attacked in the media by someone who chose to remain anonymous and said he had no specific details of the complaint. "I have no idea if a tenant put in $30,000 of repairs."
