Fiddick shivers on way to third place in NY half-marathon

Bermuda runner Victoria Fiddick is seen second from the left with 'Sex in the City' actress Kristin Davis (far left) and race winner Sally Meyerhoff (third left) along with others following the women-only More Fitness Magazine Half Marathon in New York on Sunday. Fiddick finished third overall.

Island runner Victoria Fiddick ended up on stage with 'Sex in the City' actress Kristin Davis after running to an impressive third place overall in the women-only More Fitness Magazine half-marathon in New York on Sunday.

In chilly, wet conditions that left her with mild hyperthermia, Fiddick ran a time of one hour, 25 minutes and 16 seconds to finish behind multi-All American champion Sally Meyerhoff and four-time Olympian Collen De Reuck.

Rain and temperatures around 47F chilled the 6,500 runners in the race field as they prepared for the event in Central Park.

By the time the runners got started, Fiddick said she was unable to feel her feet because of the cold. She also suffered numbness in her arms and hands as the race progressed.

However, she managed to keep up a strong pace, despite having to weave in and out of backmarkers on the second of the two laps in the park.

Afterwards Fiddick, the current women's May 24 Derby champion, was treated for hyperthermia – as was second-placed De Reuck who missed the prize presentation ceremony as a result.

Accepting her prize on stage, Fiddick met with Hollywood actress Davis and was pictured with the star of the 'Sex in the City' films and TV series.

Describing the race experience, Fiddick said: "I had wanted to get into the top ten. It was pouring with rain and I went to the park an hour before the start. We had to be in the (race) corrals half-an-hour early. I was soaked even before the start and my feet were frozen.

"At the finish line I was shaking like a leaf and went to the tent to be treated for hyperthermia – there were at least ten others in there."

She stayed in New York with the woman who owns the Bermuda house she rents, Jane Hughes. Despite being 87 years old, Hughes and her son stood in the rain to cheer and support Fiddick on both her laps around the park – something that the Island runner found to be a touching gesture, particularly as she had never met Hughes before arriving in the City having accepted an offer to stay in her New York home while preparing for the race.

The race was won in 1.14.40 by American Meyerhoff who amongst other honours is the current US women's 25K national champion. Former Olympian De Reuck was second in 1.16.26.

Fiddick was delighted with her finishing position, and although her time was slower than she has run before, said she had run to the best of her ability in the conditions. She is now gearing up for the May 24 Derby.
