Under-18s thrash US in Americas tournament
Bermuda, 199 for nine, beat USA, 84 all out, by 115 runsA 101-run third wicket partnership between Tre Manders (88) and Alex Dore (39) and a fine bowling spell from skipper Joshua Gilbert propelled Bermuda to their first win in the Under-18 ICC Americas Match Play competition in Florida yesterday.Coming off of an opening day loss to Canada, the Islanders were looking to bounce back and they did so with a disciplined performance.Winning the toss and electing to bat, Bermuda got off to a shaky start as William White was caught by Krish Goel for a duck in the second over with the score on ten.Shaquille Jones (25) was next to depart with the score on 65, stumped by USA skipper Steven Taylor, and when Onias Bascome (0) was caught by Goel the very next ball, it brought Dore to the crease to join Manders and they set about repairing the innings. One hundred and one runs later, Bermuda were firmly in control with Manders and Dore punishing the US attack.Just 12 runs short of what would have been a deserved century, Manders departed with the team in control on 166. Dore followed him back to the pavilion when he was run out on 173.Gilbert (six), Kwaisi James (one) and Christion Gibbons-Wade (six) all fell in quick succession as Bermuda attempted to up the run rate, while Delray Rawlins was the last wicket to fall when he was run out for eight.Dameiko James (two) and Jordan Smith (one) remained unbeaten when the innings came to a close at 199 for nine in their allotted overs. In reply, Taylor (26) and fellow opener Shakeel Ahmad (5) got the run chase off to a flyer, peppering the bowling to all parts of the grounds.Taylor was particularly harsh on Gibbons-Wade who gave up 23 runs in the second over, his first, to propel the Americans’ early charge. The captain belted three fours in the over. But he would be out in the fourth over with the score on 41 as he casually flicked a delivery from Gibbons-Wade straight to Dore at square leg, a welcoming sight for the Bermuda players as Taylor was in full force, hitting his 26 from just 20 balls.Gibbons-Wade grabbed his second wicket in the eighth over when Ahmad chose to have a swipe at a wide delivery and made a hash of it, the ball popping up between cover and mid-off for a simple catch with the score on 52.While Gibbons-Wade was taking wickets, skipper Gilbert was drying up runs from his end.James replaced Gibbons-Wade with immediate reward as he bowled Amarnauth Persaud (17) behind his legs with the third wicket going down at 67.Gilbert finally got his just reward when he trapped Randall Wilson (six) lbw with the score on 74 for four after 13 overs.Goel was run out in the 17th over after only three runs were added between himself and Vibhav Altekar (three).Gilbert then ripped the heart out the American line-up with a double-wicket maiden. Altekar hit right to Bascome who took a simple catch on the circle and then Zahib Tariq was dismissed for a duck three balls later as he tried to paddle a ball to the leg side but only managed to top edge his shot to square leg, leaving his side 77 for seven after 17 overs.Gilbert also removed Dave Parikh (0) with a flighted delivery to put the home team in dire straits.James then wrapped up the innings when he trapped Arsh Buch (1) in front of his wicket before Ryan Persaud (0) suffered the same fate two balls later, ensuring Bermuda a 115-run victory in 21.5 overs.Gilbert grabbed four wickets for 17 runs from nine overs, including three maidens, while James and Gibbons-Wade grabbed three and two wickets respectively. The side got off on the wrong foot in their opening match of the competition against Canada, losing by two wickets on Monday.Losing the toss and being sent in to bat, openers White and Christian Burgess put on 50 runs for the first wicket in eight overs before a mini collapse saw the side slide to 93 for three after 19 overs.Another big partnership between Gilbert and Delray Rawlins took the score from 143 for six to 191 with two overs remaining. Bermuda finished on 198 for nine in their allotted 47 overs after a rain delay in the middle of the innings.Burgess was Bermuda’s top scorer with 50.In reply, Canada scored 199 for eight in 46.3 overs, although Bermuda at one point were in control with their North American rivals at 77 for six.Gurkaran Dhillon top scored for the Canadians with his knock of 63 not out from 100 balls.
