Bay players still in the dark

Bailey's Bay bowler Jim West catches a ball during training at Sea Breeze Oval last night. The Bay squad had been expecting to hear the fate of skipper Stephen Outerbridge and bowler Cory Hill last night.

The futures of Bailey's Bay duo Stephen Outerbridge and Cory Hill remain unclear after a meeting that was due to take place last night failed to happen.

Both Outerbridge and Hill were banned by Bay for speaking out over St David's' withdrawal from this year's Eastern Counties competition.

However, the lengths of the bans handed down, 18 months for Bay captain Outerbridge, and a year for Hill, provoked a furious backlash amongst the players, who spent 45 minutes locked in their dressing room after the defeat to Southampton Rangers last weekend.

A petition circulating around the club, demanding the pair's reinstatement, was signed by the squad, who have also reportedly threatened to boycott the final round of the Eastern Counties Cup if the suspensions aren't lifted.

Bay players had expected to turn up at the ground last night to have the matter resolved before their final league game of the season against Somerset on Sunday, but have been left in the dark once again.

Whatever the outcome of the row turns out to be, it is unlikely that Outerbridge will play for the remainder of the season anyway, as a knee injury he picked up at Cup Match has proved more serious than originally thought.

The Bermuda vice-captain went for an MRI last Friday, and may require surgery to help repair the bruised knee cap, and the persistent swelling he has been suffering ever since.

Outerbridge though isn't inclined to go under the surgeon's knife until he has spoken to Bermuda team physio Craig Brown, and discussed all his options.

"Nobody has contacted me as far as my MRI results, so I told them I'm not going to do it (have surgery) until I see, or at least give me some options," said Outerbridge. "They're saying come get a surgery, and I don't know what's wrong with my knee.

"He's (Brown) at least got to give me some kind of option, I'm not getting cut open just for the sake of it. It's not really too much around the knee now, it seems like it's around the muscles that are attached to it, my quads and stuff.

"I don't know (what's going on), I just need a few opinions and for (them) to give me some type of options."

If Outerbridge does require surgery, and his suspension is lifted, that would rule him out of the final round of this year's Eastern Counties against Cleveland a week tomorrow, plus the season-ending Twenty20 competition which starts a week on Sunday.

It would also more than likely rule him out of the 'All-Star' matches that national coach David Moore has pencilled in for October, and would leave him short of cricket ahead of the vital World Cup qualifiers in Dubai next April.
