Pair admit resisting arrest
Court after they challenged Police who tried to break up a fight on Front Street on December 9.
Police approached Leonard Raynor, 19, and Shanika Hayward, 25, around 2.45 a.m. as they were shouting at each other.
Raynor and Hayward dispute Police reports that say the patrol informed them using offensive words in public is illegal but since they pleaded guilty -- they informally accepted the report as true.
Duty counsel Paul Harshaw pointed out the Police report supported Hayward's claim the Police never warned the pair about their behaviour before handcuffing them.
The report says the patrol warned them about their behaviour while "simultaneously'' handcuffing them.
The report also says Raynor said: "This is none of your f***ing business.'' as Police approached.
And Hayward said: "F*** off, mind your own business. If you both put those handcuffs on me, you're in big sh** -- I'll f*** you up.'' Neither defendant denied they said those comments to the Police.
Acting Magistrate Tyrone Chin told Raynor: "You're a young man and you are getting a long record already.
"We're not trying to ruin your life. I hope you appreciate the time the court is spending on your case.'' Raynor, of Boss's Cove Road, Smith's Parish, was fined $250 for offensive words and $500 for violently resisting arrest.
Hayward was fined $200 for uttering offensive words and $200 for violently resisting arrest.
