Selley brothers reign supreme at Ferry Reach

The 2012 powerboat season officially got underway at Ferry Reach at the weekend

Brothers Mark and David Selley were among the big winner’s during last weekend’s powerboat season-opener at Ferry Reach.Mark took the coveted chequered flag in the ‘B’ Class while David claimed top honours in the FB Class respectively.Others powering their way to victory lane were Luke Parker (A Class), Ryan Davidge (D Stock Class) and Ryan Rebello (E Class) who reigned supreme in their respective divisions. All participants competed in a 45-minute close-circuit race after organisers ruled out offshore racing due to unsuitable conditions.Sunday’s season opener was watered down with a number of top competitors opting not to turn up.However, newly installed Bermuda Powerboat Association (BPBA) Commodore Paul Wellman expects entry numbers to increase as the season progresses.“The fleet will get better and we do anticipate numbers to increase as time goes by,” Wellman said. The 2012 powerboat season was originally due to commence April 15 with the Dockyard National Grand Prix. However, the event was postponed due to bad weather.April 22nd had been set aside as a back up date for the Dockyard National Grand Prix. But BPBA were denied permission to race in the vicinity due to a cruise ship in port.Wellman said the event could be held at the end of the season instead.“We are hoping to finish the season off with the Dockyard Nationals in September,” he said. “We can’t race in Dockyard before then due to the ships in port there.”The BPBA have scheduled as many as 14 race days for the season, including a circumnavigation race designed to help prepare the association’s members for the Annual Around the Island Race.It is also now mandatory that all BPBA members compete in a minimum of two races to be considered eligible for the Around the Island Race, which is the premier event on the annual racing calendar.“We are looking forward to having a good season,” Wellman said. “Things are still coming together and we have a lot in store for this season.“We want to take the sport to the next level and give the public something to remember. We have lots in store for the public this summer.”Racing continues this Sunday at Ferry Reach.
