Youngsters’ motocross bikes stolen from race track

Thieves have been taking off-road bikes from the Southside race track in St George’s.

Youngsters have been left heartbroken after their bikes have been stolen from the Southside racetrack.Otis Ingham, member and former president of Bermuda Motocross Club, said that five or six bikes have been stolen from the track in the past six weeks.“Its never really happened before,” Mr Ingham said. “We had one or two taken, but now it’s just out of control. We need to stop this. It’s leaving a lot of unhappy children.“They are taking some sort of tool and cutting them out. Torches, hammers, hatchets. They are using all sorts of items to break into this trailers and leaving the trailers mangled.”He said in each case the police have been contacted and officers have managed to recover several of the bikes. However, Mr Ingham said that the recovered vehicles have been worse for wear, sometimes needing thousands of dollars of repairs to return them to racing condition.“This is a sport I love and I love being able to pass on that love to the younger generations,” he said. “To have these guys’ bikes stolen, it’s a put down. It discourages people. These bikes are expensive.“Parents work hard to get these bikes for their children, so to have them stolen or left needing thousands of dollars in repairs hurts.”Mr Ingham asked the public to keep their eyes out for people who are riding racing cycles on Bermuda’s roads to help cut back on the problem, and get the cycles back to their rightful owners.“Anybody seen riding outside the park isn’t one of our guys,” Mr Ingham said. “We can practice whenever we want. If they are riding around outside, the bike is likely either stolen or doesn’t belong to them.“We want to put it out there to let the public know that if they see any of those bikes to contact the police or the Bermuda Motocross Club or the Bermuda Motorcycle Club and let them know.”
