Beautiful voice with 'crazy' range
Even though it rained all day Easter Sunday, the Fairmont Southampton Amphitheatre was filled with warmth and light as gospel sensation, Yolanda Adams, ministered to the audience and gave them a much needed blessing.
As the last event of the All-Star Celebrity Weekend, the Yolanda Adams concert took place on Easter Sunday at 2 p.m. I arrived with my mother around 1.30 pm surprised at how little people were in attendance.
Nevertheless, I knew Ms Adams would deliver an amazing set.
The event was hosted by mother-daughter singing duo, Pat and Patrina O'Connor who were funny, sang very well and were inspirational at the same time.
After they blessed the food, the audience was invited to a delicious buffet filled with light, springtime cuisine.
Every time I attend a function at Southampton Princess, I am amazing by the variety of mouth-watering food their chefs create.
The menu was simple but great. A variety of salads I had never heard of like heart of palm with orange and mango, rice, some type of beef, chicken breast in a light cream sauce, mixed fresh vegetables and the best entree, red snapper in a tropical salsa sauce. Yes I was hungry and yes I do love food.
And the dessert table was even more impressive with a variety of mini desserts including tiramisu, brownies, trifle, bread pudding and my favourite, chocolate mousse in dark chocolate cups. They were divine!
So since I've gone way off topic, let me get back to the concert. The Prospect Primary School Show Choir opened the concert and showed why they were chosen to perform at Disney World with great choreography and even better vocals. They were so cute and so professional.
Toni Robinson performed probably the best version I have ever heard of 'How Great Thou Art'.
Her voice sent chills through me and she received a standing ovation from almost everyone in the room. She followed with an equally impressive version of Kurt Carr's 'For Every Mountain'.
Veterans to Gospel in Bermuda, Rejoice, performed a nice mix of old and new Gospel songs getting the crowd to stand of their feet in praise.
The group came with a complete band and sang songs such as "We Sing the Praises' and 'Oh Happy Day'.
The star of the hour, Ms Adams, was supposed to be introduced by Faith-Based boss Andre Curtis, but he was substituted by an unidentified man.
The replacement said he'd had a loss in the family and couldn't participate but he was sitting a few tables over from me.
Ms Adams opened with one of her hit songs, 'Believe' and talked to the audience throughout her set.
She told stories about struggles she has been through including her divorce and mentioned to the audience that she wanted a beachfront home on the Island if anyone was willing to donate one to her.
She sang a wide selection of songs from all her albums including, 'Open My Heart', 'It's Gonna Be Nice', "This Too Shall Pass', and 'Never Give Up'.
A song that wasn't included in her set, 'In The Midst of It All', was one of my favourite songs of the day.
Because it was impromptu, it made it even better. Ms Adams was filled with spirit as she sang the song and kept singing even after the track went of for this and many of the other songs.
It was great when she sang one of her oldest and most popular songs, 'The Battle Is Not Yours'.
I was a little upset when she was nearing the end of her set and didn't sing 'Still I Rise' or 'That Name'.
However, my disappointment quickly went away when she ended with the catchy, dance song 'Victory'.
Despite the amphitheatre not being full, it was a great concert and Ms Adams was not only entertaining but also made sure everyone in the room received a blessing.
And her voice is just so beautiful. The woman has a crazy range and sounds better live than on her CDs.
So well done Exquisite Designs for a great way to spend my Easter Sunday.
