All will enjoy this modern twist on Shakespeare
The setting looked liked royalty as soon as I set down in my seat at the Daylesford Theatre for its latest BMDS production of ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’.There was a golden curtain hanging down in the back centre of the stage and each sectioned room was laid out professionally in its place. The English-type setting also made the Shakespeare play look authentic. From the time the play started at 8pm, I found the acting to be a very professional and enjoyed every part of it.It was absolutely beyond what I expected from previously reading about the play online, and the actors were bold and unafraid to fully act out what each character’s description should be.Every performer’s voice was strong and audible and the delivery was filled with lots of enthusiasm and excitement. The costumes were amazing with many bright colours, but what stood out most to me was the dazzling red dress worn by Laura Bardgett who acted as The Queen of France. The play starts after the death of the main character Bertram’s father, as he is named the Count of Rossillion.Bertram travelled to the Court of the Queen of France to pay his respects. He doesn’t have any males in his family and becomes the Queen’s watchman.Helena, whose father was a popular physician, has a big crush on Bertram and wants to marry him, but he is terrified of her and wanted to get away from her as quickly as he could.Bertram decides to flee to Florence and ends up fighting in the Tuscan War. He gains much fame throughout his time there.Helena goes looking for Bertram, along with the help of a widow and her daughter Diana. The town of Rossillion receives a visit from the queen where the story unfolds and the ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’ play falls in its place. The dialogue between the characters flowed well. The characters expressed their emotions strongly. The atmosphere was calm and comfortable and it gave a relaxed feeling, which made it easier to enjoy the show.I would describe the style of the play as a mild comedy, which brought laughter at certain points. The appearance of all the actors/actress was excellent. Their grooming was kept well and they had a great confidence in their performance. From the speech to the stage performance it went smoothly and in rhythm with every character description.I would recommend this play to anyone who enjoys theatre shows, especially young people, to go and see it for yourself.I think both adults and youth will enjoy this modern twist of Shakespeare’s play. The Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society’s production of Shakespeare’s ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’ will be showing from tomorrow to July 27.
