Diapers mission ends in prison

A drive to buy diapers resulted in a prison sentence for a St George’s man who admitted driving while disqualified.Umdae Wooldridge, 23, was sentenced to ten days in prison after the court heard he already had two previous convictions for the offence and had amassed a total of 51 demerit points. On September 6, police stopped Woolridge at 8.45am on York Street. The officers quickly discovered that the defendant was banned from driving in June this year. After pleading guilty to the offence, Woolridge told the court he didn’t know he had two previous convictions for similar offences and asked for lenience.“I’m sorry. I didn’t meant to disrespect the court,” he said. “I just didn’t think, to be honest, that I was going to be caught. I just went to fix a key and get the baby pampers.“There was no excuse for what I have done. I just needed pampers.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner described Woolridges traffic record as “atrocious.”“This traffic record clearly indicates you have no respect for his court that has tried to work with you and deal with you,” Mr Warner said.“Clearly the fines don’t work, the disqualifications don’t work. You will have to take the punishment.”In addition to the ten-day prison sentence, Mr Warner fined Woolridge $500, or 30 days in prison in default of payment.
