Awards handed out to race winners

The curtains officially came down on the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race during Saturday’s prize giving at Government House.During the two-hour long ceremony Governor George Fergusson handed out the numerous prizes on offer to the respective winners.This year’s 635 mile ‘Thrash to the Onion Patch’ featured 166 boats, including Spirit of Bermuda that was the sole entry in the experimental ‘Spirit of Tradition’ Division.George David’s 90 ft maxi, Rambler, claimed line honours in a record time of 39 hours, 39 minutes and 18 seconds.George Sakellaris’ mini maxi, Shockwave, won the Gibbs Lighthouse Division while Rives Potts’ McCurdy and Rhodes 48-ft yacht, Carina, successfully defended the coveted St David’s Lighthouse Trophy. Carina has now won the showpiece three times under different owners.Simon De Pietro’s Briand 76, Lilla, won the Cruiser Division while Hewitt Gaynor’s J120, Mireille, won the Double-Handed Division.Michael DAmelio’s Welbourn 92, Med Spirit, won the Open Division while the Spirit of Tradition title went to sole participant Spirit of Bermuda.Steve Murray’s Carkeek HP 40, Decision, came out as the top individual boat in the Onion Patch Series comprising of the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta, Newport Bermuda Race and Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) Anniversary Regatta. Onion Patch Series team honours went to New York Yacht Club (Carina, Christopher Dragon and Gold Digger).Gibbs Hill Lighthouse entry Team Tiburón, helmed by RBYC skipper Mark Watson, was the first local boat to complete the Newport Bermuda Race and fourth overall.
