Keishon Wilson took two wickets in two balls to spare PHC’s blushes and deny Warwick a stunning Western Counties win on Saturday.St David’s, meanwhile, continued their seemingly unstoppable march towards the Premier Division title with an eight-wicket thrashing of Devonshire Rec, while defending champions Southampton Rangers finally got off the mark by beating Willow CutsWhile there was little surprise in the St David’s result, Warwick very nearly pulled off the shock of the season. In the end though their inability to catch cost them dearly.The First Division side dropped seven catches during the course of Saturday’s encounter at Somerset Cricket Club, and even taking two of those chances might have changed the course of the game.Guest player Tre Manders benefited from being dropped when he was on 27, and he went on to score 46 as he and PHC skipper Jason Anderson put on 117 for the first wicket.Anderson himself was dropped twice before he reached double figures and his 59 at the top of the order got his side off to a flyer, and even when he and Manders had departed, Kamau Leverock continued in his fine form with a blistering 67.With Khiry Fubert (31) and Clevie Wade (37) adding useful runs lower down the order, PHC racked up 307 runs before Jacobi Robinson finally held on to a catch to dismiss Delray Rawlins.Without the presence of guest players Robinson and Kian Butterfield, who took four wickets each, the score might have been even higher.And even though Warwick made a steady start in reply through Shaquille Jones and Daniel Morgan, there was no hint of the fireworks that were to follow.Jones and Morgan put on 61 for the first wicket but it took them 14 overs to make the runs, and when Hasan Durham bowled Morgan for 26, it seemed to be the beginning of the end.Durham also accounted for Jones (43) and Jade Darrell in consecutive balls to reduce Warwick to 93 for three, although Robinson scored a typically belligerent 27 his departure at the hands of Kamau Leverock left Warwick on 137 for six.With little more than 20 overs remaining, and another 171 runs needed, PHC seemed destined to win quite comfortably but then Jordan DeSilva and Sherwin Richardson took over and the game changed completely.DeSilva (68) and Richardson (50) put on 135 in a seventh-wicket stand that turned a game that was slowly crawling towards an inevitable PHC win on its head.The pair took the batting power play in the 33rd over to get themselves started and proceeded to give PHC’s bowlers a serious thumping.Wilson had already bowled a couple of spells when he returned at the death and his introduction was a last throw of the dice for a PHC team that were beginning to look beaten.The luck, though, was all with the holders, and a rank short ball down the leg side from Wilson should have been hoisted out of the ground for six by DeSilva. As it was, he stuck it straight down Manders’ throat at mid-wicket, and Richardson was then bowled next ball trying to hit Wilson out of the ground.From 272 for six, Warwick were 272 for eight, and although they had three overs in which to get the remaining 36 runs, they eventually fell just 16 short, finishing on 291 for eight.At Devonshire Rec, league leaders St David’s made short work of the home side, bowling them out for just 108 in 34.3 overs. Unlike the Twenty20 encounter a couple of weeks previously, St David’s had their full complement of players to call upon, and it showed.Spinners Del Hollis, Delyone Borden and Sammy Robinson did the damage, taking six wickets between them, while Rec’s much vaunted batting duo, Ricardo Brangman and Dean Stephens, could only muster 11 runs.Kameron Fox (25) and Derrick Brangman (20) top-scored for Rec but 108 was never likely to trouble the East End side, and with Fiqre Crockwell scoring an unbeaten 50, they knocked off the runs in little more than 23 overs, losing just two wickets in the process.While Rangers aren’t likely to defend their title, they might finally get their season up and running following their win over Cuts on Sunday. Having been bowled out for just 165, with Janeiro Tucker top-scoring with 51, Rangers seemed to be heading for their fourth straight defeat.However, Darnell Ferrell took four wickets as Cuts collapsed in stunning fashion, eventually being bowled out for a paltry 102.In the day’s other game, Bailey’s Bay handed Rec their second defeat of the weekend, beating them by 53 runs.
