Bay frustrated as Police batsmen take control

Bailey's Bay 11-0 What had been billed as the day's feature Premier Division match between league leaders Police and champions Bailey's Bay quickly degenerated into a predictable stalemate yesterday at Police Field yesterday.

The contest, delayed at the start by 90 minutes, ended in a tame draw with stumps being drawn following Bailey's Bay's successful appeal against poor light at 7.14 p.m.

By that time the powerful batting of Police skipper Stevie Lightbourne, the day's only highlight, had long been forgotten.

Lightbourne stroked 76, including four sixes and seven fours and joined Ferdinand Thorne (36) in a fourth wicket stand that added 104. Police took the score from 34 for three to 138 before Lightbourne was dismissed.

Police batted from 1.30 p.m. to 6.40 p.m., leaving Bay to face just 12 overs.

The home side manoeuvred in order not to allow Bay to get extra bowling points by declaring at 6.40 p.m. The loss of another wicket would have handed Bay eight points from the game when Police could do no better than earn seven themselves.

Bay were faced with the near impossible task of scoring 150 off 12 overs in order to get an extra batting point. And Police required five dismissals in order to get added bowling points.

With the tea score on 103 for three, Police were not about to declare and once their skipper departed, the slow scoring rate indicated that it would be a long day in the field for Bay.

Corey Hill was the top bowler with three for 34 off 17 overs and four maidens while Clarkie Trott had three for 41 off 21.1 overs with six maidens.

When play was stopped Bay had batted for just 2.4 overs.

Western Stars 158-4 declared Cleveland 59-9 Cleveland barely escaped with a share of the points from their encounter with Western Stars.

In the end it was left to last pair Johnny Richardson and Hugh Murray to fend off the visitors' attack and spare the home side's blushes.

After the start of the match had been delayed for more than two hours, Stars won the toss and elected to bat on a dancing wicket at Sea Breeze Oval.

Quickly falling to 32-for-three, Stars were revived by a 108-run fourth wicket partnership between Gregory Sampson and Ricky Brangman.

Brangman was in particularly aggressive form, blasting an unbeaten 88 which included seven fours and eight sixes in an innings lasting more than two hours.

Meanwhile, Sampson grafted his way to 43 before getting an edge to a Jermaine Postlethwaite delivery and being caught behind by Alan Douglas.

Stars declared at 5.30 p.m., allowing Cleveland an hour, plus 20 overs batting time.

Cleveland started disastrously, losing Curtis Jackson with the score on six and the situation never improved as Allan Brangman and Hassan Durham ripped through the order, each claiming three wickets. Durham returned figures of three-for-18, while Brangman had three-for-13.

Top bat for Cleveland was Del Hollis with 11.

Somerset CC 180 St. David's 89-4 St. David's skipper Lionel Cann snatched five wickets for 50 and then stroked 40 runs but his splendid effort wasn't enough to give Somerset victory as the game at Lord's drifted into a draw.

Tony Cheeseman was top bat for Somerset with 47 while Brian Morris hit 33 and Steven Brown 23 not out. St. David's' bowler Herbie Bascome returned figures of three for 35.

Shea Pitcher added 30 for the home side while Brown had two for 21 to lead the Somerset attack.

Willow Cuts 154-5 declared Southampton 32-1 Willow Cuts and Southampton played to a tame draw during this rain affected match at Wellington Oval.

After a lengthy delay, Cuts were finally able to take the crease and sped to 154 before declaring, with vice-captain Richard Basden leading the way through a polished 83 not out and brother Dexter Basden hitting 51.

Fast bowler Garry Williams took three-for-17 and Quinton Burch two-for-56.

Three Premier Division matches were postponed without a ball being bowled yesterday as Devonshire Rec. against St. George's, Warwick against Nationals and Somerset Bridge against PHC, all fell foul of the weather.

Details of the match between Social Club and Flatts were not available at press time.
