Masters set to tour Canada
The Bermuda Masters will be looking to maintain their perfect win record against the Jamaican Assocaition when the fifth annual Warrington (Soup) Zuill memorial match is played on Sunday at St David’s.The Masters will select from a squad of 17 with four ‘colts’ — Kyle Lightbourne, Dave Greenidge, Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock and Rahji Edness — named along with the likes of Allen Richardson, Clevie Wade, Charlie Marshall, Grant Smith, Lloyd Morrison, Hoyt Zuill, Ricky Hill, Ricky Brangman, Derek Wright, Winston Simmons, Herbie Bascome, Sammy Robinson and Hasan Durham.A new captain will lead the team this year because Andre Manders is now residing in the UK.Hoyt Zuill, the son of cricket historian ‘Soup’ Zuill who passed away on September 20, 2008, just an hour after hearing of the result of the first match, expects a good turnout for the match despite being held on the same day as the Twenty20 final and the start of the new Bermuda Football Association league season.‘It doesn’t bother me, if people want to come and see good cricket they will come,” said Zuill. “It they want to go and watch football or the Twenty20 then that is their choice.“I don’t let that stop me from organising it. I always have it on a Sunday in September, because most times on Saturdays some of the guys can’t make it. I book the St David’s field every year in January. We have our following and they come to the cricket game, I don’t worry about clashing with the other sports.“A lot of people are asking me about it, elderly folks who knew my dad are asking me, ‘Zuill, when is the game, are you having it this year?’ They ask every year around September because they know that is when it is going to be held.”At the completion of the 35-over match (noon start), the organisers will present the annual Cup Match Sportsmanship award from a shortlist of three players — captains Jekon Edness and Oronde Bascome and Terryn Fray. They were chosen by the ZBM commentary team and the two umpires. Two Star awards will also be presented on Sunday to two former Cup Match players, Colin Blades and Lloyd James.Blades has the second best average (49.54) in Cup Match, scoring 644 runs in 16 innings between 1970 and 1983. James held the record for the highest score in Cup Match (173 not out) for 39 years before Janeiro Tucker broke the record in 2001 with his score of 186.A presentation will also be made at the completion of the memorial match on Sunday to the top bowler and batsman on each team.n Bermuda Masters have accepted an invitation from Melbourne Cricket and Sports Club in Toronto to tour Canada next year for a series of matches from August 2-12, just after Cup Match and ahead of the final round of the Eastern Counties.
