Umpires concerned by '11th hour' appointment
Umpires Stephen West and Roger Dill have been selected to oversee proceedings at Cup Match this year although the Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association (BCUA) were unhappy that as of yesterday they still had not received confirmation of the appointments from the two clubs.
BCUA secretary Randy Butler said he understood that both Somerset and St. George's "had a lot on their plate" in the lead-up to the game. But he was disappointed that the Association had not been notified in advance so that both umpires could prepare themselves mentally and physically for what is "always a demanding two days".
"There has still not been any official announcement as far as I am aware," said Butler. "We have only been hearing bits and pieces through the grapevine, which is a crazy way to operate.
"Years ago an announcement used to be made at least ten days to two weeks in advance, which should be the proper way to proceed.
"I have just come back from an umpires' conference in St. Kitts where it was made very clear to us that an extended preparation was absolutely necessary in order for an umpire to perform. This is the sort of professional approach we should be taking if we want umpires to perform at their best and the correct decisions to be made."
Umpire West, who will be officiating in his second straight Cup Match, was only told of his appointment yesterday and admitted that he would have preferred more notice.
"It would have been nice to have known earlier. A lot of people might think that not a lot goes into the preparation but it does and it is important to know you are required as soon as possible," he said.
He was nevertheless thrilled to have had the honour bestowed upon him again.
"I am very pleased. It sort of confirms that I did OK last time and I hope that I can do as well this year, if not better."
