Tre Manders admitted that being called up to help Somerset win this week’s Cup Match was a dream come true as he will team up with cousin and skipper Jekon Edness in their quest for classic glory.Manders will be one of two colts in the challengers’ ranks, along with Greg Maybury, who will look to defend home turf come Thursday. And the Western Stars batsman is confident the side selected has what it takes to win back the coveted showpiece.“It feels very good to be called up into the team, it really is a dream come true,” said Manders. “My season has been fairly well, I have scored a few centuries this year and the club (Western Stars) are playing some good cricket so I’m pleased with the overall scheme of things.“I’m confident with the team the selectors have produced. it is one that can win and I’m anxious to get out there and get on with the game.”Manders emphasised his current form with a half-century in the draw between St George’s and Somerset in Sunday’s Colts Cup Match, playing some fluent strokes as he anchored the innings. His inclusion to the senior side carries on a rich tradition of the Manders name, with both he and Edness coming from the cricketing family that has produced a list of outstanding players. The Manders brothers, Andre (Somerset), Arnold (St George’s) and Anthony (Somerset) all played in the summer spectacle in the late 1970s, 80s and early 1990s.Tre is the son of former Somerset skipper Andre, while Edness is the son of Anthony, both following their fathers in the Somerset team.Tre is the third leading run-getter (267) in the Logic First Division, only 13 runs behind St George’s Cup Match captain Lionel Cann, and played to his true potential in the international arena when he scored 88 runs to help Bermuda beat USA by 115 runs last month.“Playing with cousin will be a great thing given that the family before us played with and against each other. So now for us to be on the same team together is great in itself.“He will be there to help me and give me a sense of belonging, given this is my first Cup Match.“Playing on the wicket was good in the sense that I have a feel for how it will play now and the things it will and won’t do on the day, but it was more important to put my head down and get stuck in rather than being out there for the fun of it all.”* Contrary to what was reported yesterday, the Colts Cup Match on Sunday ended ended in a draw and not a St George’s win.Somerset needed five runs for victory but were cut short due to a rain interruption. At the cut-off time of 7.30pm, the hosts were 147 for nine, a score that saw St George’s retain the cup.
