Tre Manders is looking to follow the rich family tradition of playing Cup Match this summer with his current form has suggesting he is ready to break into Somerset’s Cup Match side.Manders brothers Andre (Somerset), Arnold (St George’s), and Anthony (Somerset) all played in the summer spectacle in late 1970s, 80s and early 1990s.And Tre Manders, the son of former Somerset skipper Andre, is now hoping to follow his father and uncles’ footsteps by playing in the annual classic. The Western Stars batsman believes a few more solid performances could secure him Somerset’s colt position.“My form with the bat is very positive because I have been working on specific things in order to keep myself on task in order to achieve my goals,” said Manders, who played for the Bermuda national team against the MCC last summer.“Of course I have a strong feeling that I am definitely in the running for making Cup Match this year, all I have to do is just stick to it and keep performing well.“It would definitely mean a lot because then I can show Bermudian cricket fans and cricket players what I can do.”Manders is second leading run scorer in the First Division with 197, second only to big hitting Lionel Cann of Warwick who has scored 247 runs. The youngster’s batting statistics so far this season include a 51 against Flatts, 135 off 137 balls against Somerset Bridge, and an unbeaten 84 against Warwick as Western Stars go in search of promotion to the Premier Division.Should Manders be called upon to help the challengers take the coveted showpiece away from rivals St George’s, he admitted it would be fulfilling a childhood dream. He also said he hoped to help reestablish Stars as one of the top teams on the Island.“I really want people to know what I’m about and prove myself in a good fashion and how I have taking up my daddy’s footsteps,” Manders said.“It feels very good because Western Stars has been a very good cricket team from the start of my uncles, my father, Albert Steede, Gershon Gibbons and I can go on and on and I think it’s just about time to bring Western Stars cricket team back up to be one of the best cricket teams in Bermuda.”
