Fantastic achievement in the Champions League by Madrid’s big two

It is great for Spanish football that two clubs from the same city — Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid — will be battling it out in the Champions League final on May 24 in Lisbon.

It was fantastic that the two teams could go away from home on the second leg in the semi-finals and win the way they did. For Atlético to go to Stamford Bridge and annihilate Chelsea in winning 3-1 was unbelievable. It is the first time that I’ve seen somebody do that to a Mourinho team.

They had people who understood what was required and were going to attack them rather then defend. They needed an away goal and even more so after Chelsea took the lead through Fernando Torres.

Atlético played fantastic football, I thought: their touch, control and passion were spot on and, most important, they were able to get three goals to turn the match around.

The night before, you had Real going to Bayern Munich, the champions, and not just getting a result but winning 4-0 for a 5-0 aggregate win, as Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo both netted twice.

You had the World Footballer of the Year in Ronaldo and he showed what he is capable of doing with his performance in that match.

You also have to take your hat off to the coach. Carlo Ancelotti has done a tremendous job in his first year there, taking them to the Champions League final. It is the first time teams from the same city will meet in a Champions League final and it would have been great if the final was in Spain.

Even so, that will not stop thousands of fans from both clubs from making the trip to Portugal for the final.

The reason they choose the venue for the final well in advance is to give each country a chance to host it. Let’s just hope the teams get as many fans as they do at home travelling to watch the final. It’s going to be a good final with two good footballing teams.

I’m real impressed with Atlético and Diego Simeone has done a fantastic job with them, as has Ancelotti at Real. As two former players, it is nice to see because lots of times they say that good players don’t make good coaches but these two have proved us wrong. It should be a very good game and I’m looking forward to watching it.

The Premier League race in England is promising to go down to the last games, with Manchester City holding the inside track after Liverpool’s setback at home to Chelsea last weekend.

Those things happen; Steven Gerrard made a mistake and Chelsea capitalised. But, even so, Liverpool have had a fantastic season and Gerrard has been tremendous for them. Now the title race has taken another dramatic twist with two games to go. City, with a game in hand, have to be favourites again.

That could all change, however, if City drop points away to Everton today. It is up to City to win it or throw it away. I tipped them from the beginning because they have the best squad and now it is time now for them to come out and show it.

Like I reminded some Liverpool fans, the blue side of Merseyside does not like the red side, so they will not mind City winning the league. Having said that, Everton still have their sights on a Champions League spot, but I don’t think that is going to happen because Arsenal lead them by four points and should claim the fourth spot. Arsenal need only to match Everton’s result when they host West Bromwich Albion tomorrow.

One or two teams could be confirmed for relegation this weekend and it looks like Cardiff are heading back to the Championship. That said, I’m only worrying about my former team, West Ham United, who are all but safe on 37 points. My heart is claret and blue.

Cardiff are probably gone and I think Norwich, with their schedule, are going to find it tough to survive. They need points against Chelsea and Arsenal.
