The best one yet
PGA of America bosses have hailed this week’s Grand Slam as the ‘best ever’.David Charles, the PGA’s Senior Director of Championships, said the tournament at Port Royal Golf Course was probably the best the Island had seen in the five years it has hosted the event.Keegan Bradley’s exciting one-shot win on Wednesday was just the latest in a string of thrilling finishes on Bermuda’s golf courses since the Slam was switched to the Island in 2007.“I think it’s been the best one so far,” said Charles. “We had the year’s four major winners and I think that changes the dynamic of everything.“I would agree it was the best Grand Slam at Port Royal, but we’ve had four years of practice here on the Island and we’re looking forward to next year. We’ve already started the process for next year, what can we do differently, what can we improve, but it will truly start come next April at Augusta.”Port Royal is due to host the Slam again next year and with the PGA and TNT, who televise the tournament, signing a contract extention through 2019 there is the prospect that Bermuda could be hosting golf’s major winners for several years to come.“Hawaii (which hosted the event for 24 years) was very similar in that we did do pretty much two (years) maybe we threw in a three-year extension or a one-year continuance,” said Charles. “Securing 2011 and 2012 was good after last year’s event, but while that was signed by the new Tourism Minister (Patrice Minors) it was started under Premier Ewart Brown’s leadership.”The 2012 event will be the last to be held under the current two-year deal and Charles wants to be able to announce the setting for following years by the time that tournament comes around next October.“Now we’ve got to know Minister Minors and Premier (Paula) Cox that much better and I think that they are seeing it as a valuable asset within the Bermuda Tourism portfolio,” said Charles.“I had a meeting with the Director of Tourism (Billy Griffith) and he was very positive and he felt that it was the most successful one yet.“We’ve got dates for next year scheduled, I want to say it’s October 23 and 24, obviously the contract ends at the conclusion of that event. From my point of view I want to have the 2013 site secured by next year’s event, that would be our time line.”While the bottom line is always the over-riding factor in any final decision, Charles said the PGA were more than happy with the relationship the organisers had with the Island and Port Royal.“One of things that you hear is people being shocked that they can get here in under two hours from New York,” said Charles. “That was one of the downsides to Hawaii, it was an all day affair to get there, long haul flights.“Now, everybody is settled in nicely, we’re in close proximity to the East Coast were most of our customers come from and we enjoy the golf course.“What was the winning score, four-under, the golf course held its own. The course is no slouch by any means.”
