Manchester City and Arsenal bowed out of the Champions League in midweek after aggregate defeats by Barcelona and Bayern Munich, leaving Manchester United and Chelsea to, hopefully, carry the flag for the English Premier League.

United host Olympiacos on Wednesday as they bid to overturn a 2-0 result in the first leg, while Chelsea welcome former player Didier Drogba back to Stamford Bridge with Galatasaray on Tuesday after a 1-1 draw. I know they will give Drogba a warm reception when he returns. They loved him there and I’m sure they were sad to see him go. It will probably be his final game at Stamford Bridge.

In his last kick in a Chelsea shirt, Drogba scored the game-winning penalty in the 2012 Champions League final against Bayern Munich; now he will be looking for something special in what could be his last game at the Bridge. I’m sure it will be an emotional occasion for him, but through it all, I know he wants to win above all else.

Of the two English clubs left, I think Chelsea have the best chance of advancing in the Champions League, simply because José Mourinho is such a fantastic tactician and will find a way to get Chelsea through to the next round. United I’m not sure about, but I would like to see them advance because the more English teams in Europe, the better it is.

The English clubs need to look at what they’re doing and make it better so as to compete with the other teams. I have to admit I’m liking Paris Saint-Germain right now. They look like they could be the dark horse, but you can’t count out Real Madrid, who are looking good. I would say it is between PSG, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, who I think are the best team in the world.

One of the biggest upsets occurred last Sunday when Manchester City were beaten at home by Wigan Athletic, the FA Cup holders, in what was a repeat of last year’s final. I did say previously that in the FA Cup, anything is possible, although I fancied City.

It just goes to show that if you come with the right attitude and the big team are off their game a bit, then you can get a result. Wigan have proven that two years on the trot by beating City. To go to the Etihad Stadium and get a win was a fantastic feat for them. Not too many teams can do that — and a Championship side at that!

The Champions League is the big league and the top clubs in England seem to put more importance on that competition, but the FA Cup is still special to those who do not get to play in the Champions League. This will be Arsenal’s cup to win because they are the last of the big clubs still in it at the semi-final stage. They have not won a trophy since 2005 and are too big a club not to win anything.

They meet Wigan in the semi-finals and at this stage, as we saw last year and last weekend, anything can happen.
