Keeping a lookout for sharks

So warned Park Rangers and Marine Police who yesterday spent the day searching for the deep sea creatures after receiving a report of a sighting of a six-foot shark near Scott's Bay in Sandys Parish.

And Police earlier this week received a report of a sighting near Flatts Inlet, heading to Shelly Bay Beach.

On one recent occasion a report of a shark actually turned out to be foam in the water.

According to Pat Lightbourne of Blue Waters Diving, many reports of shark spotting are false.

"Very often people think they see sharks, but most of the time it could be a sting ray,'' she said. "People may see the fin of a stingray up and mistake it for a shark's dorsal fin.'' Sharks are not normally inside the reefs of Bermuda, but have lately been spotted off the North Shore by various residents.
