Football – just who are the best players in Bermuda?
Football is up and running and already this season we have seen some top class performances by teams and individuals, but the question I have this week is if you had to pick Bermuda's top three players who would they be?
I know who I would pick but prior to informing you of my thoughts let us see what others have to say.
Over the last week or two I have sat and questioned various people and as human nature would dictate, people tended to be loyal to their clubs. You will read about the opinions of three gentlemen – Richard Todd, Oladapo Frederick and Stephen Coddington.
Before we get right into the meat of it all, let us take a look at what attributes make up a quality player.
¦ Good technique – mastery of technique for passing, receiving, shooting, heading, shielding, ball handling.
n Vision and awareness – sees the field (support, pressure and space) and makes decisions based on observations often before receiving the ball
n Creativity – the ability to improvise when in possession of the ball, to problem solve and create positive attacking play.
n Tactical awareness – understanding of role and responsibility of position, and decision making in the various areas of the field, ability to defend and attack as a part of a group.
¦ Physical qualities – speed and size can be enhancing qualities but a player can compensate in other areas when lacking, work rate is essential.
n Psychological qualities – composure under pressure, intrinsic motivation, focus, self-belief and confidence.
n Sportsmanship – respect for the game, opponents and officials.
The panel of three, selected their three players and were required to give reasons behind their choices.
First up Richard Todd (head coach of St.George's):
Freddie Hall – because he provides his team with an 'X - Factor', making any defence he plays behind better. Good hands, good lateral diver, commands his area, accurate with kicking and good with his feet.
Raymond Beach – consistent goalscorer. Year after year he has shown consistency to be among the leading scorers in the league.
Nahki Wells – even though off the Island at the moment, he is a cut above the rest attacking from midfield. Good touch, pace, movement off the ball, accurate shooting and finishing, individual skill and flair!
Next we have Oladepo Frederick (former Cougars player):
Moses Steede, from Cougars – vision, touch, stamina, good game reader.
Freddie Hall, goalie for St. Georges – professional attitude, calm under pressure, excellent decision making.
Raymond (Packy) Beach, Dandy Town striker – excellent finisher, good attitude, excellent runner off the ball.
And lastly, Stephen Coddington (North Village's assistant coach):
Freddie Hall – has all the physical attributes, very vocal and organises his defence, distribution is excellent. This attribute led to two of his side's goals in their 3-1 win over DRC, commands his goal area well; timing on crosses and his handling is super, arguably the best goalkeeper in this league for at least a half decade.
Kofi Dill – he is THE rock at North Village. He has strength, speed, skill and positional awareness, unmatched by any of his peers playing at this time (Ajani Gibbons is in the conversation though). His ball control is exquisite and passes well with both feet, takes responsibility – on defensive corners he always marks the opposition's greatest threat and perennially chips in at the other end with a few.
Lastly, it would be easy to pick Kwame Steede, Sammy DeGraff or Ralph Bean, who'd all admit aren't playing to their usual standards. Nahki Wells and Keishen Bean are abroad studying. Domico Coddington is always a threat, and should be on my list but currently I've seen someone performing far better.
I am going out on a limb …Tristan Daniels. This is his debut season but oh my what a player, strong on the ball, retains possession well, a schemer with an eye for goal, he can pick a pass, long, short, behind the defence and around the corner (it sounds like I'm describing Jemeiko Jennings; I hope this young man can stay healthy and remain consistent), a maestro in midfield. I hope Dandy Town nurture this talent as he should be a pleasure for spectators' viewing.
As you can see from my select panel that there is definitely a difference of opinion and I can only imagine, that you the reader or other football advocates are shaking your heads as you probably have a different opinion entirely. It just goes to show that some people look at things differently and are drawn to different attributes and qualities in a player.
Now on to my picks, and I must say this was not an easy task.
There are some players that have performed well over the years but are slowing down now and then there is the new crop of players who are coming on strong.
So who are my three?
First up we have Freddie Hall (St.George's goalkeeper) by far the best keeper in Bermuda and arguably the best keeper Bermuda has ever had. He has all the attributes a good keeper must have and I will be shocked if he is even in Bermuda much longer as professional football is calling him.
Secondly Nahki Wells. When he left Whitney some years ago I knew he would be an awesome player. He is silky smooth, quick, good dribbler, able to eliminate defenders with ease, goalscoring ability, reads the game well, runs off the ball. He reminds me of Ryan Giggs of Manchester United. This is a player destined for glory. He is currently in England and I have no doubt he will make it as a professional.
Lastly, and someone none of my panelists named is Reggie Lambe.
Again when I saw him playing for Dellwood some years ago I knew this kid was destined for greatness. It is something about quality players that just stands out. Currently he is contracted with Ipswich in England and who knows just how far Reggie can go. Reggie is very similar to Nahki in that he has good pace, reads the game well, excellent ball skills, and a constant threat.
Unfortunately, there is no space in my top three for Raymond Beach, Ralph Bean Jr. or Kwame Steede, but these guys would definitely be my top three if I was dealing with just local players because they have been the most consistent performers over the last decade.
Having said all that, I know this will spark a few debates around Bermuda. Just remember nothing is cut in stone. These are merely opinions.
However, I encourage all the players to strive for more and aim to become the best that you can be.
It takes a lot of hard work to get to the top. Just ask Shaun Goater and Kyle Lightbourne. They are living proof that hard work pays off.
