It is pleasing to see Djair Parfitt-Williams performing to his ability at West Ham United.

Scoring a hat-trick in the under-18’s 3-1 victory over Reading Under-18 on his return from injury this past week shows he is capable of great things.

The youngster has continued to impress at the club and I’ve always known that he had ability, he just needs to keep his head down and get on with the job.

I don’t like to talk about him too much as he is young and it is a funny game, but he has made tremendous strides in the short time he has been there.

We look for him to do bigger and better things, I will have a chat with him when he comes home for Christmas, so it will be a good time to have a chat about what he has been doing.

Rai Simons is also having time over in the UK. He is improving at Ilkeston FC weekly and his exploits helped the academy to the second round of the FA Youth Cup where they were beaten by Accrington Stanley on Tuesday.

Bermuda has a lot of talent and if it can be taken and moulded properly, the future is bright. We have to have the children playing at the highest level for the national team be good and make inroads into progressing to leading tournaments.

With the good comes the bad, as three players were sent off in the match between Robin Hood and Devonshire Colts at Goose Gosling Field Saturday night.

While players get sent off for whatever reasons, there isn’t any reason for anything to spill over off the pitch — and in this instance, it is a real shame.

I came up in the times of rough-house, but fair, tackles and that was that. There wasn’t any moaning about, “He kicked me this and that.” You had an enforcer on your team that would go and do the job for the team as the game played out.

After the match, you would have a drink, chat about the match and remain friends when you parted ways. But this goes back to the comment I have repeatedly said: the grooming of an individual starts from school and learning the proper rules, such as being tackled hard and fairly, and they have to pick themselves up and go again.

There is no excuse for three players being sent off. That shows no self control or respect and we have a lot of work to do if we are to get the point across that football is a tough game.

On the international scene, Cristiano Ronaldo had a magnificent World Cup qualifying play-off against Sweden to help Portugal to advance to the World Cup finals, along with France, Greece and Croatia.

The Real Madrid man scored all four goals for his country, while his rival, Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic also produced, albeit in a losing cause, grabbing two goals.

The type of form Ronaldo is in, he is the best player in the world and playing in a league of his own.

Anyone who argues this doesn’t watch the game because he is head and shoulders above anyone at the moment, and it is a big gap.

The one thing I can say is that if one or two big countries don’t qualify for the World Cup, it would still be a big competition, regardless of who is or isn’t there.

It is nice to see Portugal making it, however, because they make it a bit more glamorous and have the potential to win the whole thing.
